What to serve with NYD steak pie

We are hosting my inlaws for New Year's Day. Ginormous steak pie ordered from the local farm shop but what should we serve with it?

I'm all for roasted veggies and cauli cheese. DH thinks mash and peas are the only option. What would you have with your steak pie?

I'd definitely say a green veg with a pie. Maybe peas and tender stem broccoli.

Potato is a hard shout. My head is saying mash but my heart says roasters. But my heart ALWAYS says roasters whatever the circumstance

Sunbird24 · 27/12/2021 13:37

New potatoes (lots of butter!) and green veg

SarahJessicaParker1 · 27/12/2021 13:39

Definitely green veg and I wouldn't do roasties with a pie personally.

I'd do root mash (carrot, parsnip, sweet potatoes, maybe swede) and peas I think.

Marmelace · 27/12/2021 13:39

Homemade chips. I'm craving chips and mind

AdaColeman · 27/12/2021 13:44

Cauliflower cheese and chips/wedges.

ApolloandDaphne · 27/12/2021 13:51

Mash, peas and carrots in this house.

OliveHenry · 27/12/2021 13:52

Mushy peas of course!

GhostofChristmasCheer · 27/12/2021 13:54

Definitely mash and green veg (I'd do broccoli because I hate peas, but I'd probably have peas as well for others). If there was cauliflower cheese too I'd definitely not complain!

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 27/12/2021 13:58

Mash, peas, cabbage and gravy.

Fferny1 · 27/12/2021 15:27

Boulangere potatoes from BBC good food. Essentially crispy potato gratin without the creaminess. I cooked this last night with our traditional home made Turkey & ham pie plus sprouting broccoli. Alternatively Braised lettuce with peas & onions would also add a touch of freshness and it's easy to cook.

ParkheadParadise · 27/12/2021 15:33

I serve
Mashed & Roast potatoes
Carrots, green beans, peas

piefacedClique · 27/12/2021 15:35

Always mash and broccoli with steak pie here.

Scotlass · 27/12/2021 15:35

Always mash, carrots and Broccoli. Same dinner every New Year for as long as I can remember.

piefacedClique · 27/12/2021 15:35

Ooo yes! And marrowfat peas

jollygoose · 27/12/2021 15:38

I would do broccoli in the oven with a cheesy white sauce and chips

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 27/12/2021 15:48

DH and I never agree on this.

He's Scottish and prefers a potato variation with peas.

I'm from Southern Europe and potato+pastry is just plain wrong to me! I'd go with fresh tomato and basil salad and sourdough!

Chewbecca · 27/12/2021 16:32

Mash, broccoli, carrots and peas.

DartmoorChef · 27/12/2021 16:34

I would do mash and roasties, broccoli, carrots and cabbage.

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/12/2021 16:39

We have ours with peas, mashed turnip and mashed potatoes

pumpkinposey · 27/12/2021 18:01

Lots of great ideas thanks!

I currently have GD so not fussed for the potato option (actually I am very fussed about it!) so might let DH have his say on those

MintyGreenDream · 27/12/2021 20:01

Mash,peas,sprouts and gravy

Oblomov21 · 27/12/2021 20:24

Mash and green veg.

AdoraBell · 27/11/2022 17:37

Broccoli, either tender stem or standard, steamed with fine green beans or peas. Probably mashed potatoes although I can’t eat potatoes with a pie.

BlameItOnTinder · 27/11/2022 20:19

Pickled red cabbage? Buttery carrots and peas?

FannyFifer · 27/11/2022 20:20

Turnip, roasted veg & mash.
Cauliflower cheese I don't think goes with steak pie.
