God I love leftovers.

Anyone else find that the reheated leftovers of almost any meal is usually better than the original?

Tonight I had a leftover piece of cod wrapped in pancetta, in a tomato and olive sauce, that hadn't been eaten 2 nights ago, plus some new potatoes and green veg leftover from yesterday. Fried them all up together and it was absolutely sodding delicious! Even DH, who wasn't that keen on the original meal (hence the leftovers) came sniffing around wondering what smelt so good.

I find this is often the case. Anyone else?

No! I've got a weird thing about them. When I met DH and he'd always be saving bits of meals in tupperware in the fridge, I was grossed out. I accept however that stews, soups and curries are better the next day when reheated. But I can't cope with things like you've mentioned. Something about the idea of it disgusts me. I never understand all the posts on MN about Christmas leftovers. I cook more than enough for a meal on the big day but some people seem to cook double what they need just to have leftovers.

Too much turkey is one thing but piles of yesterday's veg? NOPE!

Leftovers are delicious and all the more so because I think of them as frugal meals, even if it’s really just because I cooked too much in the first place.

idontlikealdi · 08/09/2021 22:22

I hate leftovers. Roast potatoes in particular. They're never the same unless you can be arsed to make bubble and squeak

Bluntness100 · 08/09/2021 22:23

Depends what it is, I have to be honest though I’d not be keen on eating refried two day old left over cod.

FreeBritnee · 08/09/2021 22:24

Cold pizza 😍😍

Akire · 08/09/2021 22:25

I don’t get leftovers either. I live alone so I cook just what I need for one meal or double for the next day. But that’s a meal not “leftovers”. Maybe if you cooking massive buffets meals for the family you have constant stream of plates in fridge?

DramaAlpaca · 08/09/2021 22:25

Oh yes, I love leftovers.

BulbasaurusRex · 08/09/2021 22:27

Second bake lasagne is THE BEST

WhistlersandJugglers · 08/09/2021 22:28

Fried leftover potatoes are one of the greatest foods. I had them this evening fried up with an egg and tomatoes and mushrooms. Obviously I added baked beans at the end. Delicious.

NorthernDramaLlama · 08/09/2021 22:29

As soon as the word left over is thought, the food goes in the bin! I made extra pasta knowing I will eat it tomorrow and will eat it happily, but 'leftovers' no. I know it's mad but my brain thinks left over equals stuff people didn't want first time!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/09/2021 22:30

Gosh, there's some wasteful people on here! And you're missing out.

@idontlikealdi

Leftover roasties are nice in a frittata type thing with bacon, spring onions and cheese

What?????
kittenkipping · 08/09/2021 22:37

I'm all about the leftovers. I plan them in. Like Christmas, but pretty much every week. Roast lamb day 1. Shepherds pie day 2. Dhal and curry day 1. Leftover dhal with stock to make lentil soup day 2. Etc. And cold cuts from the fridge, are easily the best snack ever.

Totally agree with you OP - so wasteful and missing out on so many delicious food possibilities!

Not missing out if you think it tastes horrible....and not wasteful if you don't cook too much at a time!

This is the reason i am in the shape I'm in now. All I had to do was scrape them into the bin. I bet that's what Kate Moss does !
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/09/2021 23:23

I'm a size 8...

OP posts:
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/09/2021 23:24

And this is probably partly to do with the fact that when I'm full, I out the rest away and eat it another night.

Um how’s it wasteful. No one said they were binning food, peoooe can cook what they want to eat you know. And being slim is not about eating left overs , you can cook and eat the right size portion,

Anyway for me, I am happy enough to eat left over food, but I don’t think I’d be refrying cod from two days past, glad you found it appetising though.

kittenkipping · 09/09/2021 07:21

I'm surprised by the weird aggressive tone on this rather tame food n drink thread Shock I mean, it's not aibu so why do naysayers feel the need to comment at all?!

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the cod, certainly wouldn't have given it to the kids, but thought it was worth a risk just for me. Besides, I have a cast-iron stomach.

In terms of cooking the correct amount, I had! It was my son's portion but he'd been feeling a little under the weather so didn't eat it. Though I do sometimes have leftovers because I only eat as much as I need to satisfy my appetite, and some days that's less than others. I was brought up to clear my plate, and unlearning that has been a big part of helping to keep my weight down.

Anyway, I still thoroughly enjoyed my meal! Grin

Leftovers are great! Leftover mash, especially.

You are right @Bluntness100, I assumed people were binning leftovers which surprised me. My mum almost always over catered and I have found it difficult to cook ‘just enough’ so assumed others did the same but of course, that may not be the case and many posters who don’t like leftovers may be able to cook just the right amount for each meal.
