God I love leftovers.

Anyone else find that the reheated leftovers of almost any meal is usually better than the original?

Tonight I had a leftover piece of cod wrapped in pancetta, in a tomato and olive sauce, that hadn't been eaten 2 nights ago, plus some new potatoes and green veg leftover from yesterday. Fried them all up together and it was absolutely sodding delicious! Even DH, who wasn't that keen on the original meal (hence the leftovers) came sniffing around wondering what smelt so good.

I find this is often the case. Anyone else?

I work on the principle of Cook Once Eat Twice (or thrice) so in effect, I’m often eating leftovers. A freezer comes in useful at this point.

In the winter I often make soups out of leftovers. Some of them work out really well.

@idontlikealdi

I hate leftovers. Roast potatoes in particular. They're never the same unless you can be arsed to make bubble and squeak
Make roast potato soup. It is amazing! Sweat chopped onion or shallots in butter, add chopped leftover roasties, chicken or turkey stock, warm through and them blitz until smooth. Season to taste and serve with a swirl of cream. You're welcome.

Refried pasta with added cheese. Say no more.

Extra food for the next day or morphed into a new dish. Absolutely

I hate the obligation that comes with leftovers. Especially the less nice ones (chilli/lasagne/Chinese takeaway are the best leftovers).

Eat 3day old noodles that were only just ok to begin with.....meh. sadness.

Bin them.....hear my mothers voice in my head "in my day....."

I try and Mari Kondo my mind when it comes to leftovers. The initial meal brought me joy. That's all it had to do. Will this second portion bring me joy? Yes - then eat. No - then bin.

I love leftover stew, lasagne or ragu, always tastes better because the flavour has mingled more.

I have a complicated relationship with leftovers - my parents used to make them deliberately unappetizing and use them as punishment Hmm. Which now I reflect on it is really fucking weird

I'm looking forward to my cold roast chicken sandwich for lunch tomorrow though. Also a big fan of second day Chinese takeaway.

I not that fussed about the whole big Christmas dinner. I only cook it to enjoy grazing on the leftovers for a day or two.

PurpleDaisies · 29/09/2021 08:55

I’ve got leftover pasta for lunch today. When i say leftovers, I mean the extra that I cooked specifically for lunch! I’ve got used to serving out on to two plates and a take away tub or two to stop eating everything at once.

Totally agree about Christmas dinner leftovers. Christmas dinner sandwiches. Mmm…

Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/09/2021 08:58

Bubble & squeak is the ultimate left overs meal! too good just for Christmas. Mmm.

I love leftovers, and I never understand how you can know exactly how much to cook... what if you (or someone else in your family) is more/less hungry .... what if someone just doesn't want to eat three potatoes, or someone had a larger lunch than expected so doesn't want a 'big' dinner. Confused.

Last night I was on my own, I cooked one piece of chicken, it was nice but I realised I didn't need to eat the whole piece, I would have been greedy to eat it so I saved it and it will make a chicken salad for lunch.

One piece of chicken? How big was it? It sounds like a mythical mumsnet chicken…

Purple Grin one chicken breast.

And I am usually a very greedy eater but trying to only eat if I am genuinely hungry.

Leftovers can be better than the originals!

Roasts especially, roasties from the fridge or refried. Day2 lasagne renamed with a little more milk. Curries. Chilli, bolognaise, casseroles. Just the time of year for leftovers to come into their own with comfort foods!
