Chicken pie but no condensed chicken soup??

CimCardashian · 08/08/2021 10:10

I can't get any condensed chicken soup anywhere!

I have cream of chicken soup and chicken broth. Will these work in a chicken pie? I could thicken them with cornflower.

Can you get condensed mushroom?

Ricekrispie22 · 08/08/2021 10:19

I’ve only ever used cream of chicken for a pie recipes.sainsburys.co.uk/recipes/chicken-leek-and-mushroom-pie

BertieBotts · 08/08/2021 10:27

Do you have any cream? I have used cream by itself to make a sauce for chicken pie before. Or you could use it to thicken the soup.

crumpet · 08/08/2021 10:29

Or use chicken stock, with a bit of cream or a flour roux to thicken it a little

CimCardashian · 08/08/2021 10:29

My son hates mushrooms. I also don't want to go out again today (I went to about 5 shops yesterday to find condensed soup 🙄)

I hardly ever use tinned soup when making a chicken pie. Lots of recipes out there

CimCardashian · 08/08/2021 10:30

@Ricekrispie22 thanks!

Thanks all! I'll experiment with what I have and see what happens

I would just make a sauce with butter, flour then chicken stock and dash of cream

Londonnight · 08/08/2021 10:32

I make a white sauce and add half a chicken stock cube to it to make a chicken pie. I have never used soup.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 08/08/2021 10:35

I can’t understand using soup. Seems very old fashioned to me. Just make a white sauce etc as PP have said and lots of recipes out there that don’t involve soup.

Dragon50 · 08/08/2021 10:39

I often use garlic and herb Philadelphia mixed with stock and other seasonings.

Charlieandlola · 08/08/2021 10:43

No need foe tinned soup - melt butter , add flour, cook the paste for a minute , then add warmed milk ( stirring madly) and then hot chicken stock and a glass of white wine until you have the thickness you want .

MerylSqueak · 08/08/2021 10:47

I do Mary Berry's. Boil you chicken with carrots and celery, peppercorns and bay. Sometimes White wine. 45 mins. Remove the chicken and shred. Discard peppercorns and bay. Take out the veg and chop finely. Make a white sauce with the stock. Add back in chicken and veg.

Even chicken hater DS likes it.

AlwaysLatte · 08/08/2021 10:52

Can you make a chicken in a gravy sauce pie rather than a creamy sauce?

gogohm · 08/08/2021 11:06

I use creme fraiche, chopped tarragon, oregano, mushrooms, shallots/onions, sun dried tomatoes, salt and black pepper and puff pastry

Movinghouseatlast · 08/08/2021 11:09

Just make a roux sauce. It is very easy.

Ninkanink · 08/08/2021 11:10

Just make your own sauce, or you could use chicken gravy.

Unfashionable · 08/08/2021 11:14

This Jamie recipe is excellent:

So many ideas, think I'll make it every week to find which version I like the best.

That sounds like an excellent plan.

I really fancy chicken pie now.

I just use creme freche. I want to try one with a white sauce now though.

Good plan op. Let us know what your favourite is!

TheWashingMachine · 08/08/2021 18:03

I just use some creme fraiche, a bit of stock and a tea spoon of mustard plus some parsley/chives

Plumtree391 · 08/08/2021 18:07

I have made chicken pie in the past and never put a tin of soup in it, didn't know that was a thing. We live and learn (I have learned two new things on Mumsnet today).

Ninkanink · 08/08/2021 18:25

I don’t think it’s something everyone does. But I guess it might be a good shortcut?

I always use gravy in my pies. Or leftover chicken stew that’s been reduced/thickened. Dammit I do really want a chicken pie now!! 😭😭
