Spam - tell me your thoughts before I kill MIL

She collects my DDs from school 3 days a week whilst I work, which is great, I do appreciate it etc. They have a hot school dinner on those days so she only needs to make them a snack/light dinner after school. I make sure there are loads of baked potatoes, beans, cheese, nice bread, tuna, ham etc etc so she can take her pick out of a reasonably healthy bunch of stuff. I come home tonight and there is a lump of stinking spam in the kitchen that she brought over and the girls are going mad about it, saying its the most wonderful thing ever .

What's wrong with a bit of Spam?

Walnutshell · 27/11/2007 21:07

Smirrrrrrrkkkkk....!

My (lovely) MIL used to have ds 2 days per week whilst I was at work. For the first few months (this started when ds was 8mo) I used to provide neatly tupperware'd purees and mini meals for him but after a while I found she was increasingly buying her own stuff - usually just baby food jars which were basically the same kit (only inferior of course ) - but I put it down to her wanting to feel as though she was doing something and let it go... After all, she did a great job playing with, caring for and loving him as I'm sure your MIL does and that was the important bit.

snowleopard · 27/11/2007 21:08

rofl @ "stinking spam"

I know it's vile but it is one of those things that kids quite like and I bet your MIL is just trying to have a special relationship and special things they have with granny - I know my mum has that agenda.

If you want to scupper it, wait till she's gone and tell them it's made of lips and eyelids etc. But I really don't think it's all that bad of her...

sandyballs · 27/11/2007 21:11

I've already put them right off it by explaining what is in it

well said snow.

sandyballs - breathe deeply, smile and make a Spam sandwich. you might even like it

sandyballs · 27/11/2007 21:12

I agree that the most important thing is the care and attention she gives them. But why bring that over? Made me heave, chucking it in the bin.

Could have been worse, at least it wasn't foie gras!

snowleopard · 27/11/2007 21:13

Because she knew they'd like it and like her for it and she could feel she is more fun than you. Simple!

Desiderata · 27/11/2007 21:14

Well, maybe she likes it?

Honestly, I think you should just be happy that you're getting the support and forget about the Spam. A bit of crap every now and then isn't going to do them any harm.

colditz · 27/11/2007 21:14

slice it, grill it, sandwich it with cheese ....
have ER on stand by...

SenoraPostrophe · 27/11/2007 21:16

oh get over yourself woman. there is nothing wrong with spam - it has no more chemicals in it than most ham, and no more offal than most sausages.

Penpen · 27/11/2007 21:20

I'd want to kill my MIL if she fed my baby spam!!! (Or if she didn't... better off without them I say!!)

Why do MILs insist on having ideas of their own? If only they'd stick to the script, life would be a whole lot simpler.

That said, I wish mine would pick up my DD 3 times a week, that would be great. On that count, you're a lucky lass!

dyzzidi · 27/11/2007 21:24

I love Spam!! My gran gave it to me too and my mum hates it.

She used to give it me whenever I stayed over on sandwiches for supper.

I know I know Iknow whats in it but to this day If i am bit down I will have a Spam sandwich with a cup of tea and it really reminds me of Gran.

I suppose in the grand scheme of things could it really be worse than whats in sausage rolls.

Desiderata · 27/11/2007 21:24

Ha ha! That's just reminded me of school in the 70s. We used to get deep-fried Spam

Kathyis6incheshigh · 27/11/2007 21:25

Spam fritters were a favourite at school dinners when I were a lass!

Don't they do a readymeal version in the supermarkets now?

I suppose it is made of shit though. Oh well.

My nan gave us sugar sandwiches and I haven't turned into a frog yet.

snowleopard · 27/11/2007 21:27

I remember spam fritters - they were half-moon-shaped, dripping with lard and REALLY NICE (I'd find them grim now of course)

southeastastra · 27/11/2007 21:29

how can anyone like spam fritters? yukkkk
always came with beans extra yukkk

spam always has that jelly stuff around it. ew.

Desiderata · 27/11/2007 21:32

We used to have lard (dripping) sandwiches when I was a kid. And syrup sandwiches.

Yum, yum, yum.

SenoraPostrophe · 27/11/2007 21:33

that's because they got so much exercise going up and down all those chimneys, desiderata.

SenoraPostrophe · 27/11/2007 21:34

but yum, spam fritters. might make some for tea tomorrow.

Desiderata · 27/11/2007 21:36

Ha ha!
