Condiments on toast

Anyone else like non-standard stuff on toast? Today I had mint sauce. Wondering if there are any other condiments that might work. Cranberry sauce I imagine would be good. Mustard probably a bit much. On the fence on horseradish, might give it a go.

absolutely not procrastinating Wink

Love a ketchup buttie.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 29/04/2021 23:01

Since I read a tip to sprinkle salt and pepper on buttered toast when you have a boiled egg (rather than sprinkling it on the egg or on the plate) I sometimes now just have buttered toast with S&P without the egg. Bloody gorgeous!

When I was at school I used to love tomato ketchup and ready salted crisp butties. I'd never thought of ketchup on toast til I read this thread. That's tomorrow's breakfast sorted.

Mustard on toast is yum. See also cream crackers. Treat it like marmite - a thin smear.

Add a layer of Horseradish under cheese on toast.

Blue cheese dressing.

Bluesheep8 · 30/04/2021 06:52

I forgot, hoummus on toast and prawn cocktail sauce on toast. Also that pink burger relish.

Leftover bolognese on toast with cheese is divine

redtshirt50 · 30/04/2021 07:10

I really couldn't imagine a life without toast!

fruitpastille · 30/04/2021 07:22

I don't use bovril for anything other than toast so I count it as a spread, not a condiment.

longwayoff · 30/04/2021 07:26

Bovril is a spread made for toast and transports you to heaven. Marmite, oddly, although it's close cousin, is bloody horrible. Face it! Toast is for everything.

longwayoff · 30/04/2021 07:28

Yes, incorrect apostrophe acknowledged.

fruitpastille · 30/04/2021 07:33

@longwayoff I'm in complete agreement about bovril/marmite and the importance of correct apostrophes.

Bovril, every morning here, love it

@GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea

We had salt and pepper sandwiches as kids. And my dad alway said when he had a little bar of chocolate as a kid his mum used to make him put it in a slice of bread to make it go further.
@GuyFawkesHadTheRightIdea I'm not sure where your Grandparents or Dad grew up, but French schoolchildren often enjoy a small piece of chocolate in a portion of baguette as an after-school snack (or goûter)!

Oyster sauce on toast is lovely.

Susannahmoody · 04/05/2021 02:03

Is butter a condiment?

AdaColeman · 04/05/2021 02:07

Lea & Perrins splashed on cold thickly buttered toast. Marmite of course goes without saying.
Mayonnaise is the winner though, like sandwich spread without the bits.

niknac1 · 06/05/2021 13:01

I know this is not a condiment but when I was young we used to get beef dripping from a butchers at the local market and we used to put that on toast. The beefy brown bit used to taste really delicious. I know this must sound awful.

AdaColeman · 06/05/2021 15:53

it isn't awful!

On a recent holiday in Poland one of the restaurants put out thick slices of bread and a pot of dripping to munch, while you waited for your meal. The Americans we were with wouldn't try it at all, but we tucked in, remembering it from our childhood.

lazylinguist · 06/05/2021 16:11

Slightly off piste, but I saw a video the other day using hash browns as toast Shock. Basically a large, crispy-looking hash brown, topped with cheese, guacamole and salsa .

Not liking the sound of many of these tbh, but peanut butter and sweet chilli sauce sounds like a winner!
