Help! Toad in the hole

BorisJohnsonMicrowavesHisBacon · 23/02/2021 10:54

Hi!

I have a sudden craving to make toad in the hole for our tea. I have sausages, I have all the stuff to make the Yorkshire pudding I have one question... are you meant to cook the sausages first? Or do you sit them in the batter raw Confused we don't have a grill (it broke and I'm saving up for a new oven) so if I need to cook them first I'd have to bake them as I hate the way fried sausages make the house smell!
Thank-you!!

I cook the sausages for 20 mins first

StrawberryPi · 23/02/2021 10:56

I half cook the sausages in the dish I'm going to do the toad in, then take the sausages out the tray, add a bit more fat to the tray if it doesn't look like enough, whack the oven up and heat until the fat is smoking. Then I add batter and sausages back in a cook till all puffy and delicious!

PhantomErik · 23/02/2021 10:57

I cook the sausages first.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/02/2021 11:00

What Strawberry said. Cook in the same dish so your oil and dish are hot.

But beware of you're serving with potatoes, the double carb police are out this morning 🤪

Wheresmyfuckingphone · 23/02/2021 11:03

I haven't had toad in the hole for ages. Thanks for the reminder. Mmmm...

ImInACage · 23/02/2021 11:05

I've always put the sausages in raw, I don't think I've ever cooked them before hand. Our chef at work taught me how to make it.

giletrouge · 23/02/2021 11:10

Eat it with bread, roast potatoes and chips. Have jam sponge for pud. Drive the fuckers (the carb police) mad. Grin

AdaColeman · 23/02/2021 11:14

You'll need onion gravy too! Enjoy! Wine

Have I missed something to do with doubling carbsGrin

I am the carb queen! Carbonara and salted chips is my fave meal GrinGrin

Thank you for all the advice!

That's it. Toad in the hole this evening. Thanks for the reminder !

NetballHoop · 23/02/2021 11:38

I always put them in raw. Nigel Slater's onion gravy is lovely poured over it.

I always shove them in, in the dish I'm using with the oil for about 15 mins first. And serve with mash and gravy 😂

Thank you for all the advice!

You missed someone starting a WHOLE THREAD (about a thread!) to say that salmon en croute should not be served with potatoes, but only with green veg, because of double carbs. Very very serious, as far as I could tell. There were many responses. Grin
giletrouge · 23/02/2021 12:28

The double carbing thread is top of trending!

EugenesAxe · 23/02/2021 12:30

I cook for about 8-10 mins then batter in the hot oil. If you have whole grain mustard it makes a nice addition to the batter!

thatonesmine · 23/02/2021 12:30

I give the sausages 10 minutes in the oven then add the batter.

Lostinspace23 · 23/02/2021 12:31

This recipe makes an epic toad in the hole. Cool sausages first and then use the hot sausage fat and oil to add the yorkshire mix to.

Lostinspace23 · 23/02/2021 12:31

*cook the sausages first, even!

Chewbecca · 23/02/2021 12:32

Yes, bake the sausages first.

I follow these instructions from Galton Blakiston.

No extra carbs served with TITH here yet I am very fat - the OP of the other thread would totally befuddled.

IAmJackieWeaver · 23/02/2021 12:34

I start to brown the sausages but put them into the batter with an uncooked side facing upwards, so they don't burn whilst cooking

Thank you for all the advice!

Just don't put potatoes with your en croute or garlic bread with your pasta

JackieWeaver this is genius. You have all the authority here on Toad-cooking. Grin
WingBingo · 23/02/2021 17:01

May I suggest removing the sausages from their skin, making balls, bake them for 10 mins then add the batter.

The fat from the sausages help the batter to rise and I just like balls.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 23/02/2021 17:08

I sweat off a finely sliced onion until it's soft, then give the sausages a bash for 5-10 minutes, the onions will start to crisp and go golden, and recently I have been adding slices of black pudding and little bits of fresh rosemary

served with beans or with gravy and mash

WorryingMum2029 · 23/02/2021 17:10

Yes you have to cook them first. Pale sausages are so unappetising.
