Pasta recipes for DH who doesn't like pasta

ElderMillennial · 16/02/2021 18:40

I love pasta. DH is not keen. He will eat bolognese, lasagne and pesto pasta but is not keen on any kind of creamy pasta or a traditional tomato recipe.

I don't make pasta often because he doesn't like it.

Do you have any pasta recipes that even a someone who is not a lover of pasta will eat?

I would make chicken marsala and give that a try.

Jenitherabbit · 16/02/2021 18:43

I'd try seafood pasta with a tomato base. I've also made a simple tomato sauce to go with penne and grilled some salmon to put on top.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 16/02/2021 18:50

Salmon, spinach, peas, garlic, came fraiche and pasta. It's creamyish but quite tangy ?

ElderMillennial · 16/02/2021 19:02

I don't like seafood but don't mind something veggie so could maybe cook fish separately and stir in...

I don't know what you mean by chicken Marsala (in the context of pasta)!

I'm not wild about pasta.

Can't you just do your own thing once a week so you get your pasta fix and he cooks something he likes.

karmakameleon · 16/02/2021 19:05

DS1 won’t eat any pasta with ‘sauce’ but he’ll tolerate and occasionally ask for

  • carbonara made traditionally with no cream
  • Jamie Oliver’s pasta with Savoy cabbage and pancetta
  • spaghetti pangrattato (fried breadcrumbs)
  • crab linguine

None of these are tomatoey or creamy.

Chasingsquirrels · 16/02/2021 19:06

I don't like pasta.
I'll eat lasagne but not keen, but don't eat any other pasta.
I'll do pasta & meatballs with a tomato sauce and do some roasted potato wedges for myself.

TheSpottedZebra · 16/02/2021 19:07

Do a pasta sauce and serve his with spuds?

ElderMillennial · 16/02/2021 19:12

I do cook myself pasta for lunch sometimes to get myself my pasta fix but I'd like to make pasta he likes. He doesn't hate pasta itself, he just isn't keen on pasta sauces and or creamy sauces so I'm looking for something that we both enjoy.

Could he just have the topping you make but have it with rice or bread?

ElderMillennial · 16/02/2021 19:17

sorry I haven't explained well

I don't think he dislikes pasta itself just most pasta meals as he doesn't like the sauces

He also likes meat in most / every meal

Chicken Picata would be another one to try.

pastabest · 16/02/2021 19:23

Slice cherry tomatoes in half , cook in the oven in oil, garlic, a few chilli flakes and herbs until it can be mushed into an oily sauce.

Boil spag/linguine while it's cooking in plenty of salt.

Mix the two together once the pasta is boiled and add Parmesan.

The sauce just and so coats the pasta so it's just like little flecks of tomato and chilli in flavoured oil.

It has to be good quality cherry tomatoes to work not cheap 90p a bag ones.

If you really want it to be really amazing add some bacon lardons too.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2021 19:25

Does he like seafood? If he does I’d just concentrate on linguine/spaghetti with king prawns/mussels/clams/squid etc in butter/olive oil/wine sauces with lemon/garlic/chilli/parsley. There are loads of simple, easy and quick variations.

karmakameleon · 16/02/2021 19:29

Another one that DS1 eats is a variation of Delia’s bacon and leek pasta in a cheese sauce but I make it with barely any cheese sauce so it comes out quite dry.

yearinyearout · 16/02/2021 19:32

Does he like spicy? I make chicken Arabiatta regularly which is easy and tastier than a basic tomato sauce. Nice with added chorizo.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 16/02/2021 19:32

DH isn’t keen. He loathes creamy sauces, and isn’t keen on bolognaise. I make a drier pasta recipe by heating oil, chucking some garlic in it and then browning off chicken and chorizo. When the meat is cooked I add piles of chopped up pepper and red onion. I then find a (very) large bowl and mix this with cooked pasta. I might add some olives at this point.

DH eats this happily, and my four teenagers consider it the pinnacle of culinary excellence. They don’t have the highest standards. Grin

Filled pasta or gnocchi with olive oil, Parmesan and black pepper. No sauce required.

LemonViolet · 16/02/2021 19:35

Has he tried proper carbonara, that is egg, cheese and bacon/pancetta, no cream?

As he likes bolognese, how about other proper ragu type recipes, but with lamb, or venison etc?

Roasted veggies - aubergine, courgette and peppers, roasted so they’re wonderfully soft and flavours intensified just stirred through pasta and lots of grated cheese on top. Maybe as a bake, seeing as he likes lasagne?

Come to think of it, any pasta bake? I like broccoli, red pepper & cheese. Breadcrumbs or polenta on top for extra crunch texture.

Blue cheese - sometimes I’ll literally just grate/crumble blue cheese onto hot pasta and it melts enough to be it’s own sauce. Couple of olives & sundried tomatoes mixed in too mmm!

Just garlic, lemon juice and olive oil can be nice too if you have really good pasta. I like this with peas and bacon bits too.

I like a lot of recipes with smoked salmon, prawns or tuna too but if you don’t like seafood that wouldn’t work for you!

Different homemade pesto recipes - I like an aubergine and rocket one.

comeHailorSnow · 16/02/2021 19:36

How about Gnocchi? It's mouth feel is more like rice than pasta.

ElderMillennial · 16/02/2021 19:44

I love arriabiatta. He doesn't.

He likes gnocchi

Some good suggestions there @lem

Is it that he just wants a meaty meal, rather than being fobbed off with Ladypasta?

trunumber · 16/02/2021 20:15

Truthfully I just wouldn't bother - DH doesn't like pasta dishes, He makes a sauce, does rice with his and pasta with mine
