What, if anything, do you have for dinner on Shrove Tuesday?

Do you bother with dinner, or just have pancakes?

We used to have lentil soup and then pancakes, but nobody in the family other than me likes lentil soup, or any soup really!

I know this is Mumsnet, so, I assume many people just quickly have a whiff of lemon juice from the pancakes and that sees them through till Easter Wink, but for everyone else, just wondering what people's traditions are.

Also, my dcs don't like pancakes enough to make a meal of them alone.

ALL the pancakes!! Last year DS1 managed to put away 11 😂

timetest · 12/02/2021 20:09

Our own body weight in pancakes.

I force myself to eat one pancake with some kind of savoury filling (eg chilli and cheese - I'll make a small quantity of chilli or use something out the freezer) - and then it's a glorious free-for-all on the sugar, lemon, syrup and Nutella, until all the batter is gone.

Passthecake30 · 12/02/2021 20:21

We’re having a light fish/new potatoes type of meal with pancakes for pudding. The kids will probably insist on pancakes for breakfast too.

Sammiesnake · 12/02/2021 20:21

Pancakes are the meal!!

AnnaSW1 · 12/02/2021 20:23

Just pancakes

KobaniDaughters · 12/02/2021 20:29

@HaggisTheGreat

Massive pile of pancakes with a large range of sweet and savour filling options, all on the table. Everyone helps themselves to whatever they want in whatever order.
This whole thread is giving me joy but nothing so much as THIS!

@WunWun

We just eat pancakes until we feel sick.
Same.
Empressofthemundane · 12/02/2021 22:34

It’s once a year. We have fluffy , American style buttermilk pancakes with butter and maple syrup and streaky bacon.

Not healthy at all. Fat Tuesday is meant to be a blow out, so why not? The kids love it.

Neither of mine like pancakes very much so we don't bother usually. It'll be a normal dinner for us.

drspouse · 14/02/2021 22:07

We're going to have savoury pancakes- a ham/cheese recipe in BBC Easy Cook. DS will just have ham but I think it will be liked. It also cooks in the oven after making the pancakes so we can then get the sweet ones ready 😋😋

CinnamonStar · 14/02/2021 22:21

We'll have savoury pancakes - to be honest, I make them quite often, so nobody will be that excited, but they'd be indignant if I didn't make them.

I make them one by one in the pan. If you want a hot topping, like melted cheese, you have to slice it/layer it all up on a plate. I will flip the pancake, then upend the contents of the plate onto it to melt.

Dc1 and I both like gruyere and spinach, with black pepper and nutmeg, DC2 likes chicken and mozzarella with a smear of pesto, DH just likes cheddar.

Sweet pancakes will be melted chocolate and banana, or apple and toffee sauce. Or all 4.

DiamondBright · 15/02/2021 13:32

I think, as I'm not working tomorrow, we'll probably have pancakes for breakfast rather than after dinner, with some warm Nutella and fruit 😋

MrsRedFly · 15/02/2021 22:54

We are breaking all rules and having pancakes for lunch. Dd (11) made the batter this evening and sent me to tesco for ice cream and strawberries.
I did ask if she would like savoury pancakes and she looked at me like I had 22 heads so that was a no.

gincakecomps · 16/02/2021 10:01

Usually just (sweet) pancakes Smile

lazylinguist · 16/02/2021 10:14

We don't always bother with pancake day, but when we do, we have a normal dinner and then one or two pancakes each. Dh bought some ready made ones from the supermarket yesterday (not because it's pancake day - I doubt he'd remembered!) so we might just have those. Pancakes are nice, but I can't get that excited about them tbh!

Stumpedasatree · 16/02/2021 22:46

We had sourdough pancakes for brunch with berry compote (warm berries in simple language), peanut butter and chocolate spread. For dinner roast chicken and socca pancake with courgette and red onion. Delicious

Melange99 · 16/02/2021 22:47

We don't have pancakes, we have toad in the hole. On the basis it is batter.

SpudsandGravy · 18/02/2021 22:46

I had a big pile of roasted chicken wings, because I forgot it was Pancake Day :-)
