What, if anything, do you have for dinner on Shrove Tuesday?

Do you bother with dinner, or just have pancakes?

We used to have lentil soup and then pancakes, but nobody in the family other than me likes lentil soup, or any soup really!

I know this is Mumsnet, so, I assume many people just quickly have a whiff of lemon juice from the pancakes and that sees them through till Easter Wink, but for everyone else, just wondering what people's traditions are.

Also, my dcs don't like pancakes enough to make a meal of them alone.

Hmm quite a mix then. I love savoury pancakes. Definitely involving cheese!

Just pancakes here.

Can't imagine eating a normal meal and then having pancakes. It's the whole point of pancake day for us.

But with two teenagers, it means we need a lot of pancakes. We have two pans so two of us can cook them at once.

idril · 12/02/2021 17:03

Oh and definitely only sweet ones.

Ihatesandwiches · 12/02/2021 17:04

Going with crispy chicken (rather than duck) pancakes and then crepes foe pudding

idril · 12/02/2021 17:05

@WunWun

We just eat pancakes until we feel sick.
Yep, same here.
Topseyt · 12/02/2021 17:06

Pancakes. Just pancakes. With either Nutella on then it lemon juice and sugar. That is dinner for Shrove Tuesday. If anyone wants anything different they can make it themselves.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 12/02/2021 17:13

We have savoury pancakes followed by sweet.

Probably cheese and ham for the DC and DH and I will have something like spinach and ricotta.

Sweet tend to be banana and Nutella, maple syrup and ice cream or lemon and sugar.

Nacreous · 12/02/2021 17:18

Savoury pancakes then sweet again here.

Now if only you could still buy findus crispy pancakes ...
You can I had a mozzarella and sun dried tomato one for lunch. We live the life of high sophistication here in the house of Lolly.
HaggisTheGreat · 12/02/2021 17:21

Massive pile of pancakes with a large range of sweet and savour filling options, all on the table. Everyone helps themselves to whatever they want in whatever order.

BallsToYouSue · 12/02/2021 17:21

I was a vegetarian child in the 90s; I have had more than my fair share of Findus crispy pancakes!

We won't have anything except a few pancakes. We only eat in the evenings anyway so used to it. Ds doesn't like them so will have breakfast lunch and dinner as usual

Oh this is a good idea! A veritable pancake smorgasbord! How do you contend with toppings which need to be hot, like cheese, (I confess, I am becoming a bit fixated on the cheese aspect of savoury pancakes Blush).

Galettes saracin filled with ham, cheese, and egg. Lemon sugar crepes for puds.

TierFourTears · 12/02/2021 17:39

I'm thinking pancakes for breakfast this year since its half term.

elQuintoConyo · 12/02/2021 17:42

I get home at 9.30 on Tuesday nights, so we're having pancake Day Sunday morning.

On the table to fill your own:
Slicey cheese
Cream cheese
Ham
Shredded roast chicken
Mushrooms
Syrup
Brown sugar
White sugar with cinnamon
Nutella
Lemon juice, freshly squozen.

You can pick and mix as you like. With orange juice, thick hot chocolate (the good Spanish stuff: chocolate a la taza) and strong posh coffee (from that screw together Italian coffee pot you put on the hob), we don't drink it often, too lazy Grin

Batshitkerazy · 12/02/2021 17:47

When I was younger, I had dinner at my boyfriends on Shrove Tuesday and remember thinking it was really odd that we just had pancakes for dinner. I thought it was a dessert for after your normal dinner. But then I am a greedy pig. Had pancakes the last couple of evenings in fact

CherryRoulade · 12/02/2021 17:48

Pancakes followed by pancakes. Lemon and sugar.
If we’re still hungry we have pancakes.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/02/2021 17:54

@Gliblet

We just have something like scrambled eggs on toast with pancakes for pudding.

My mum used to make a stuffed pancake meal for dinner on Shrove Tuesday though. Chopped ham, chicken and veg rolled up inside thick pancakes and baked in a savoury white sauce. Sort of an 80s English enchilada I suppose. DH and DS would be horrified if I served it up to them Grin

Why would they be horrified? Sounds nice.

We just have pancakes. We eat plenty of fruit and veg in other ways, so not bothered about that.

You can in Morrison’s!
MistleTOEboughski · 12/02/2021 18:36

I used to love Findus crispy pancakes as a child but not sure if I would like them now.

Georgyporky · 12/02/2021 19:36

A real meal.

Are there many/any christians around that do the whole Lenten stuff?

Scarby9 · 12/02/2021 19:39

Just pancakes.
With lemon and sugar or golden syrup.

whoami24601 · 12/02/2021 19:57

We have savoury pancakes with a kind of cottage pie filling (or anything gravy based!) for dinner then choc spread, jam, lemon and sugar for pudding. Though the ham and cheese ones might be an alternative for DD who hates gravy.
