Theres worst things, mum used to let us dip raw rhubarb in sugar, yum

CadaverousCorpulentCarmenere · 31/10/2007 10:11

Does it work??
It sounds fine to me but that doesn't mean there won't be a pack of judgemental harpies over here in a minute.........

bethoo · 31/10/2007 10:11

not a worst mother but that is going to encourage a sweet tooth and potentially bad teeth and possibly a fat child. i think tomatoes are sweet enough!

mindalina · 31/10/2007 10:12

Nooo - I often put a tiny bit of sugar in when I cook with tomatoes. Takes the nasty sharpness out.

When I was little I had a friend whose mum used to let her have sugar sandwiches, I kid you not.

bethoo · 31/10/2007 10:12

did not mean to offend anyone!

mindalina · 31/10/2007 10:13

Tomatoes aren't sweet - where does this come from? I have never in my life tasted a tomato that didn't make my eyes go all screwed up with it's tangyness. Uncooked, I mean.

dooley1 · 31/10/2007 10:14

it does sort of deract from the healthiness of them better no tomato than sugared ones i'd have thought!

Dropdeadfred · 31/10/2007 10:14

cherry tomatoes on the vine from waitrose are lovely and sweet

2sugars · 31/10/2007 10:18

No, definately not the worst. But you may get a few raised eyebrows when you find you have the only children who ask or sugar instead of salad dressing in a restaurant.

I think it must be a bit like cereal - once you've put sugar on it you're on a slippery slope .....

quickdrawmcgraw · 31/10/2007 10:23

It think it's a good idea. First you put a little sugar on, give to child, convince child that tomatoes are something they love. Next time put on 1/4 amount of sugar and next time none. Child learns to love tomatoes in 3 easy steps.
I do this with mearly all meals that I want my children to learn to love.
Make the first one child friendly and then gradually take out unhealthy and add more healthy ingredients. Works every time.

bethoo · 31/10/2007 10:24

i do not think i have ever had a tomato that is not sweet!

2sugars · 31/10/2007 10:25

qd, cue my dd1 saying "Mumeeeeeee!! This one isn't sweet enough!"

MascaraOHara · 31/10/2007 10:28

she ate one last night with sugar and took them in her lunchboxe with sugar on today.. now my dd actually asked for tomatos in her lunchbox!!

I'm figuring I can reduce the sugar gradually?!?

MascaraOHara · 31/10/2007 10:32

lol at carving it pumpkin style..

Oh i should probably add, I've been obsessed with getting dd to eat the damn things.. you wouldn't not believe the amount of times we have watched and read "I will not ever, never, eat a tomato" followed byt " would you like a moon squirter"

Baffy · 31/10/2007 10:32

I used to eat tomotoes with sugar - sounds revolting but it's actually really nice!

My mum did just that MoH - gradually reduced the amount of sugar. I love them now.

MascaraOHara · 31/10/2007 10:33

lol Baffy it was my mum who said about it and gave her one to try (after she left them in her lunchbox yet again)
