Mincemeat in cupboard - suggestions please

Searching through cupboards and found a jar of mincemeat I didn't use from last year.

BBE date is November this year...

Should I chance it and use it for mince pies next Christmas?

Alternatively what are other things I could make apart from mince pies in the meantime?

You can just keep it for next christmas (this christmas?), mine this year was a jar I’d bought earlier in the year dated November, I always make mine early and freeze them anyway.

Or you can do this oat slice and swap the dates for mincemeat, it’s nice with a coffee.

Mincemeat toasties if you have a sandwich toaster.
Not really a recipe but delicious and a favourite in this house between Christmas and new year.

I have a good recipe for mincemeat muffins, they aren't as obviously christmassy as mince pies and really are so easy and yum.

Mary Berry has a gorgeous recipe for a mincemeat loaf cake. Very easy to make.

My mil makes a gorgeous apple and mincemeat pie

You can use it to stuff apples.

I take it you just add the mincemeat to the apple filling? I'm useless at apple pies but could always try, DM makes a delicious one!

Google Fanny Craddock mincemeat omelette and it will be christmas before you can face it eating anyway!

Another vote for apple and mincemeat tart, delicious with custard. Or use to fill the centres of baked apples, or put a layer in an apple crumble.

Mincemeat shortbread. It’s the absolute dream www.blakeandbull.co.uk/blogs/recipes-with-instructions-for-aga-range-cookers/christmas-shortbread ignore the aga bit if you don’t have one, just use 180 ish

I’d recommend Nigel Slater’s mincemeat cheesecake. I made it for Christmas using a jar of mincemeat BBE Nov 19 and it was absolutely delicious, and I’m by no means a competent cook.

Another vote for the apple and mincemeat tart/pie. I used ready made and rolled shortcrust pastry, finely chopped one huge Bradley apple and mixed it with enough mincemeat to fill the pastry case then used pastry twists to cover the top and dusted with icing sugar. Gorgeous with custard or vanilla ice cream.

Delia's Christmas book has a recipe for mincemeat souffle - it's quite fool proof and they are really delicious.

You could do what one now passed relative of mine used to do and make all your mince pies around Easter time and defrost them for the big day. It sounds a bit gross but I would give anything for a slab of mince slice now!

Lotsachocolateplease · 13/01/2021 17:02

I had the same - found a jar of mincemeat in the back of the cupboard. Used it to make apple and mincemeat crumble, served it with leftover brandy butter - delicious!
Also used some for mincemeat flapjacks,
100g each of unsalted butter, oats, sugar, mincemeat. 60g plain flour, good heaped tbsp golden syrup, 1tsp cinnamon. Mix well together and bake for 30 mins on 160

JangledBat · 13/01/2021 17:10

Yep, she just mixes with her apple filling

Delia's mincemeat and apple strudel is good:

orangenasturtium · 13/01/2021 17:25

It also works well as a flavour with marzipan. If you google you'll find lots of recipes eg marzipan and mincemeat palmiers or apple, mincemeat and marzipan tart

Dumpyandabdabs · 13/01/2021 17:25

Its lovely mixed with apples in a crumble or even better instead of jam in bakewell tart

Getabloominmoveon · 13/01/2021 17:25

Glut a bit of brandy or whisky into it, stick it back in the cupboard and use it next year. That’s what I did this year and it was much nicer than the new jar.
