Would you eat dogs?

If dogs were farmed and slaughtered in properly regulated premises would you eat them?

I can understand a lot of people keep them as pets and I'm not advocating eating Fido next door but surely eating properly farm bred dogs isn't unreasonable is it?

Personally I wouldn't have any problem with it if it was properly controlled.

So mammalian carnivores generally not. Is it because of the livers?

There was a tv murder show in which the victims were killed by being fed livers from elderly dogs. Apparently they accumulate vitamin D to levels toxic to humans. Similar applies to seals I believe - the Inuit know not to eat too much of it but westerners have come a cropper by eating too much liver.

So in the unlikely event of being forced to eat my nearly 15yo sausage dog, I'll pass on the pâté.

No. I do eat meat though, so I am a hypocrite. Like many things it is cultural. Raised in a place where dogs are friends, pigs are food etc. I'm sure if I grew up somewhere where pigs are household pets and dogs were food, then I would feel different.

My Aunt has travelled all over the world and would eat whatever meat was served up to her, so I'm sure if they appeared in supermarkets some people would go for it.

I’ve eaten horse, rabbit and goat too. I would eat guinea pig if it were on the menu somewhere. I didn’t eat whale in Iceland (because there are issues with sustainability and I didn’t fancy it in the least either).

I’ve never had dog. I don’t fancy it. Not out of sentimentality. Just generally, we don’t really tend to eat carnivores. I suspect they don’t taste great.

DH did lie to to MIL who accused us of eating dog when we went to korea. We didn’t (it wasn’t an option anywhere we ate anyway and we were more interested in all the really nice food available anyway) but the told her we did to annoy her. She’s Hard Work and one of those people who is deeply misanthropic but claims to adore animals.
