Would you eat dogs?

If dogs were farmed and slaughtered in properly regulated premises would you eat them?

I can understand a lot of people keep them as pets and I'm not advocating eating Fido next door but surely eating properly farm bred dogs isn't unreasonable is it?

Personally I wouldn't have any problem with it if it was properly controlled.

No I wouldn't, why would you need to? Most of the world is looking for plant based alternatives to meat.

WitchesSpelleas · 26/11/2020 17:08

Thought this was going to be about hot dogs.

Lucked · 26/11/2020 17:08

No. I don’t think carnivores are meant to taste particularly nice anyway - lots of other nice things to eat.

S111n20 · 26/11/2020 17:08

@Greentea93 I agree with you.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2020 17:08

No. Generally there are good reasons for not eating carnivores. For our own health, but also it would be ridiculously inefficient to farm them rather than herbivores (which again are inefficient compared with raising plant crops for our direct consumption). So there's no rational case for farming dogmeat.

But beyond that, dogs aren't quite the same as other animals. We've co-evolved with them.

No but I also don’t eat other animals. I agree it’s weird that people eat some animals and not others based on pretty much nothing though. I especially struggle with the idea of eating duckling or lamb, I can’t fathom the concept of eating babies.

That's an interesting point I hadn't considered.

Apart from fish I can't think of any other carnivores that humans eat.

Yes. I'd try it. I eat other meat that is from cute animals (I think most animals are cute. Some of them taste delicious) so I won't be a hypocrite and say it's too cute to eat. I've eaten rabbit while I had a pet rabbit.

Georgyporky · 26/11/2020 17:17

I had Chihuahua in Mexico !!!

Was it nice?
copperoliver · 26/11/2020 17:34

For god sake no it's barbaric, they are pets and should never be eaten. They need to change the law in all countries. Absolutely disgusting

How is it any different eating pigs, cows, sheep etc? Surely that's equally as barbaric?
Sexnotgender · 26/11/2020 17:35

No!!

I’m vegetarian though. But even if I wasn’t no.

Surely it is only a cultural thing though?

If a dog was farmed for food and wasn't a pet how is it any different from eating a pig or a sheep?

Some cultures regularly eat dogs and would regard cows as sacred.

love the juxtaposition (is that the right word?) of your user name with this statement
jennie0412 · 26/11/2020 17:44

Dogs bred purely for meat wouldnt.

Georgyporky · 26/11/2020 17:45

@Birdsandbeez Pigs are carnivores.

There was a report in New Zealand about a Maori family eating their Pit Bull Terrier - best thing to do with a PBT imo.

Birdsandbeez · 26/11/2020 17:47

Yea, what I was meaning though is if they were properly farmed and fed suitable food.

As another poster said humans don't seem to eat carnivores so I'm guessing there is a risk of disease in the food chain if things weren't thoroughly regulated.

I'd prefer horse, I've heard dogs quite a strong flavour whereas horse is a leaner beef.

rosy71 · 26/11/2020 17:50

No. Why on Earth would you need to?
Dogs are not prey animals.
Dogs are useful to us in that they fulfill certain roles as working animals or as companions. Under what circumstances would you suddenly decide their main role is to be eaten???

People need to eat less meat, not be looking for new animals to eat.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/11/2020 17:50

We tend not to eat carnivorous animals. If you look at the Biblical rules in Levitucus (not that I normally base my life on this) animals with claws /paws are not permitted and, although non Jews or Muslims now eat pork, eating dogs, cats, tigers, bears etc is not something we are comfortable with in JudaoChristian cultures. Other cultures, obviously, see things differently.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/11/2020 17:51

That looks like I think pigs have claws, I just meant that they are also forbidden in the OT.

I'd have no worries about eating horse but imagine it would be tough, don't the French eat horse?

As for dogs I'd expect the breed of dog would have a lot do with the flavour.
