Gnocchi

Gnocchi and chicken Kiev (from butcher not frozen processed type) for dinner

I have cooked gnocchi before but only boiled and DH didn't like it, though he's previously said he likes gnocchi!

How best to cook it? I'm thinking pan fry but do I also boil first. It's the "fresh" kind from supermarket fresh pasta section.

Also what to serve with a breaded Kiev and gnocchi. Green beans, tender stem broccoli and asparagus sound good but I don't think I have any.

I probably have cabbage and carrots along with baked beans and marrow fat peas

Oh brocoli I'm not sure about the gnocchi I don't like it either its very texturous I would do wedges or potatoes and do the gnocchi another day

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2020 16:58

Just have peas and carrots honestly just that

edgeware · 14/10/2020 16:59

I oven roast it - no need to cook first. We tend to roast with other veg in the tin too.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 14/10/2020 17:00

Gnocchi tends to be a good option in sauces as an alternative to pasta.

I don't think it will do with chicken Kiev at all. The veggies are a much better option.

FairFriday · 14/10/2020 17:01

I sometimes fry it - and Italian friend of my mil showed me. Before that I’d just boil it.

formerbabe · 14/10/2020 17:01

I fry gnocchi for my DC. I don't boil it first. Comes out fine.

CoffeeInAnIV · 14/10/2020 17:03

I wouldn't serve gnocchi with chicken Kiev but it's your choice.

Pan fry with butter, garlic and parsley. Perfect.

AdaColeman · 14/10/2020 17:03

It will be fine pan fried! Of the vegetables you have to hand I'd do carrots and peas, cook the carrots then tip in the peas at the end to save on washing up

combatbarbie · 14/10/2020 17:05

We fry it!! Gets a much better reception than when boiled

InTheLongGrass · 14/10/2020 17:12

I'd have the kiev with a selection of veg tonight.
Then tomorrow lunch I'd fry all the gnocchi in butter til golden, and stuff my face without the kids around.

I've never worked out how to replicate it, but I've had gnocchi in a tomato sauce with cheese on top which was scrummy. It might be the quantity of cheese that I'm underestimating being required.

lazylinguist · 14/10/2020 17:15

I would cook them in boiling water, not fry them. But you need to then coat them with some kind of sauce afterwards or at least a load of butter and herbs etc. I'm going to make some homemade gnocchi this week after seeing a video on the brilliant 'Pasta Grannies' FB page (full of ancient Italian women making amazing pasta dishes). All the gnocchi recipes on there involve boiling them (except maybe the oven baked dishes -not sure if the gnocchi are boiled first for those).

Whathappenedtothelego · 14/10/2020 17:19

If you are set on having them with chicken Kiev (which seems an unusual combination), then I would put them in an oven dish and put the kievs on top to cook them. Then all the garlic butter that oozes out of the chicken will coat the gnocchi.

Fere · 14/10/2020 17:22

Are you buying ready made gnocchi? Refry them on a bit of butter in a frying pan. You could start with some shallots or onion first but is not necessary. IMHO is much tastier than reheating them in water.

Chewbecca · 14/10/2020 17:25

I like mash best with chicken Kiev (+veg).
Gnocchi I think is best served either like pasta.
I once, deliciously, had a small number of gnocchi as a 'potato' side to chicken, it was fried in garlic and sage butter and served with a bns puree.

FlyingFlamingo · 14/10/2020 17:29

I have served them with chicken kievs, either roasted in olive oil ( no need to pre boil), or boiled then mixed in with cream cheese and spinach, covered in Parmesan then oven baked until the top is crispy.

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2020 17:32

Actually the Kiev on top of the Gnochi sounds the best be like little roast potatoes Smile

EatPrayYoga · 14/10/2020 18:05

Thanks all

I didn't think Kiev and gnocchi were such an odd combination!

I think I've always had gnocchi with chicken breast and the butcher had Kiev's so that seemed reasonable but now I'm questioning this!

Sounds like pain frying is okay but I've read it will just take longer and I will need some kind of sauce

DH suggested salad with the Kiev and gnocchi though I'll see what else I've got.

I'm sure I've got onions, mushrooms, cabbage, garlic, peppers...

My initial reaction was it was a strange combination (like others, I generally use gnocchi instead of pasta as a dish rather than a side) but now I'm thinking that the garlic butter from inside the Kiev would make a lovely sauce for the gnocchi when you cut it open. For what it's worth, I much prefer boiled gnocchi to fried but you have to only cook them for a minute or two otherwise they go very gloopy

The sauce sounds good too though DH isn't keen on a tomato sauce. Or mushrooms.

Yes that sounds nice. I'm thinking of them more like little potatoes more than pasta but maybe that's where I'm going wrong as it is breaded chicken...

I am now questioning this combination though. I have plenty of potatoes. I could make chips in the air fryer and serve with pees

I haven't had a Kiev for years. I really don't know what I'd eat with it!

Yes I think you just cook it til it floats? I haven't cooked it for ages but DH wasn't keen so we didn't have it again for ages.

I've had it in restaurants and IIRC it was "pan fried" which is what makes me think it will be nicer that way

I like boiled gnocchi but I realise it's not for everyone. Just fey it lightly or if you have the oven on for the chicken roast it. It is nicer when crispy. But aren't most things? Grin

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 14/10/2020 18:15

I would say a tomato and basil sauce would work but note your DH isn’t keen. I would go for a leek and creme fraiche sauce with some peas

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/10/2020 18:30

If you shallow fry them they (almost) taste like mini roast potatoes. I use them loads for nibbles with drinks

meow1989 · 14/10/2020 19:11

I also wouldn't serve with lieve.

I like to boil, then fry in butter so its crunchy in the outside, and have with a little pesto, some cherry tomatoes and buffalo mozerella. Yum!

EatPrayYoga · 14/10/2020 19:30

Fried the gnocchi in some oil, butter, garlic, mushrooms and parsley (not boiled first)

Not only was it delicious but went well the the Kiev

We had some rocket, tomato, spring onion, balsamic and Parmesan on the side

Gnocchi
