Does this sound okay for vegan options?

I'm doing some tapas bits for my DB and SIL in a couple of weeks when they visit and SIL is vegan. We'll have bread and some cheeses, so will get some vegan cheese in, and then:

Garlic mushrooms
Green beans
Patatas Bravas
Quorn meatballs in tomato sauce (doing lamb ones for meat eaters)
Corn on the cob

Will do plenty as some dishes will be shared, but does this sound okay? Anything else that would be nice to have?

It sounds a bit of a funny mish mash to me. The corn on the cob seems a bit random.

Also two dishes (meatballs and patatas bravas) with tomatoes are quite samey.

Have you checked that she likes vegan cheese? It's expensive and not really very nice, especially uncooked.

Maybe:
garlic mushrooms, potatas bravas, garlicky green beans, hummus, dish of roasted vege (red onions, squash, courgettes, red peppers - cooked with some herbs and paprika), breads, salad.

Olive tapenade, baba ganoush, etc over vegan cheese if you’re going to buy cheap vegan cheese. Maybe some spiced rice?

FuckingBUTTERbeans · 01/07/2020 10:38

The corn on the cob is a bit random, you're right. I'll ditch that. I would usually do patatas alioli, but wasn't sure if vegan garlic mayo would be nice? She does like vegan cheese. The green beans will definitely be garlicky. Hummus and roasted veg is a good idea, thank you.

FYI quorn meatballs aren’t vegan too

Ylvamoon · 01/07/2020 10:41

How about spicy kidney beans/ chickpeas/ lentils for a bit more balance?

FuckingBUTTERbeans · 01/07/2020 10:41

Really? She eats a lot of Quorn. I was going to make them out of Quorn mince. I don't know if they do ready done ones.

tabulahrasa · 01/07/2020 10:44

Some quorn is vegan, some isn’t, the meatballs aren’t.

But seeing as you’re making them from mince then you just need the vegan mince...

Can I ask though, how are you making meatballs from quorn mince?....

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2020 10:44

Instead of meatballs, if you can be bothered, you could make some sort of fritters - sweetcorn fritters or courgette fritters maybe (if the latter, leave courgette out of the roast vege mix).

Vegan garlic mayo is okay - nicer than vegan cheese.

anotheronebitesthecrust · 01/07/2020 10:48

Quorn meatballs aren’t vegan - some supermarket own brand veggie balls are

anotheronebitesthecrust · 01/07/2020 10:48

I don’t think quorn do a vegan mince either

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 01/07/2020 10:50

Instead of trying to make vegan versions of meat dishes, try making things that are naturally vegan, using vegetables, beans etc. AFAIK it would be be pretty difficult to make meatballs from quorn mince, it doesn’t really work like meat mince.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/07/2020 10:51

Ooh courgette fritters with chilli, mint and a vegan feta type cheese would be nice.
There's a few recipes out there for vegan croquettes, if you can be arsed. That's a nice hearty thing for tapas.
Padron peppers, for everyone?

tabulahrasa · 01/07/2020 10:52

Neither they do...

I’d seen the other stuff and assumed they did tbh, I’m not vegan just don’t eat meat.

FuckingBUTTERbeans · 01/07/2020 10:54

tabulahrasa I was going to do what I would do with lamb mince, some seasoning, garlic, a little onion and tomato puree to make them more mouldable, but as Sisyphus has said it doesn't work like meat mince, maybe that won't work.

The fritters sound nice, Remus. I'll include those.

The Birdseye green cuisine meatballs are vegan and quite tasty.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2020 10:59

Vegan feta is okay cooked; not so nice on its own (soapy). Courgette and vegan feta fritters would be lovely - make plenty because the carnivores would probably like them too!

Ah - I thought it was something you’d done before, I was after tips, lol ... no, it’s not at all like meat in that way.

I usually use sausages for things that want moulding.

tabulahrasa · 01/07/2020 11:01

Not quorn ones I’ll add, they’re too hard. Defrosted Linda McCartney ones work though... but they still taste like sausages so only work for some things.

hm246 · 01/07/2020 11:02

The Asda own plant based range halloumi ‘meatballs’, has vegan cheese in them, (I’m not a vegan) taste amazing!

fourquenelles · 01/07/2020 11:04

Gigantes plaki (Greek-style baked beans) - the big butter beans. Lovely!

WaffleCash · 01/07/2020 11:04

Courgette fritters are great, we just make them like onion bhajis - gram flour, spices and grated courgette

fourquenelles · 01/07/2020 11:04

Just clocked your user name too!

InsideOutChickenParm · 01/07/2020 11:05

Leon do a really nice vegan aoili that you can buy in sainsburys

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2020 11:06

You can buy ready made gigantes plaki in tins or jars, if you wanted something nice and easy just for the vegan.

Cherrybakewellard · 01/07/2020 11:08

Hellman's vegan mayo is fine, would t know the difference if I wasn't told.
