Anything you like - she'll be knocked out by the candle! What about an animal - do you have any pets

My DDs had a number 1 shaped cake. Not very original but it looked good and she loved it.

CountessScabula · 12/09/2007 11:35

I did a sweetie mountain

A big dome shaped cake covered in white icing and then rows of sweets eg smarties, licquorice allsorts, jelly beans etc all round. Then I stuck a few sparklers in the top. They LOVE sparklers at this age!

sparkler · 12/09/2007 11:37

Sparklers are great!!!!

mishymoo · 12/09/2007 11:37

How about a colourful caterpillar

IcingOnTheCake · 12/09/2007 11:38

Oh yes the famous caterpillar cake. Can't go wrong there. DH had one for his birthday last month and he was 34!!!!

What about a Hansel & Gretel sytle cake. With biscuits for the roof and choclate fingers for windows and door frames. I might have a picture of one I did somewhere, I will try to upload. Give me 5!

I once did a ladybird cake: a big sponge sandwich covered with strawberries, blueberries for the spots, and strips of licorice for down the middle and the antenae..

IcingOnTheCake · 12/09/2007 11:44

How would you do a caterpillas body?

Sorry, I didn't take a picture of that one, but I used fondant icing on the cake board and put mounds of icing on the board first to make little hills once it had been covered in green icing. Then I used lollies as trees (just pushed them into the mounds) and I used jelly tots and white chocolate buttons to make a path. You could go wild with different sweets really.

bozza · 12/09/2007 11:45

I did a hedgehog. Choc cake with choc butter icing, buttons for the eyes, lots of chopped up flake for the spikes.

MaureenMLove · 12/09/2007 11:46

Swiss roll. Cut it into chunks and then stand them up on their ends iyswim.

bobsmum · 12/09/2007 11:49

I did a lion for dd. I hoped she would see it and roar (her party trick at the time).

She said Baa.

Just did a cake for ds' 5th birthday which was an ordinary sponge with a number five in smarties. Smarties aren't quite so sinister now they've had to take the evil colourings out (still Nestle though). A "one" in smarties could look really colourful. ALso try to spell her name out those letter candles you can get from card shops - simple but really effective!

Have a look at [http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/cake-gallery.html]

Still can't quite figure out how to put a link in properly.

bobsmum · 12/09/2007 12:09

cool cakes maisie - how did you do the screen for the laptop??

MaureenMLove · 12/09/2007 12:10

When you copy the file name you have to remove the bit and replace with Then at the other end you either leave a space and write 'this' or 'here' or whatever and then put Job done. Try it out and if you do a preview first before posting, you can see if you've got it right!

mishymoo · 12/09/2007 12:17

I've done it..thanks MML!

maisemor · 12/09/2007 14:10

the screen is just a laminated piece of A4 paper that we printed off of the computer. Then put it on some barbeque sticks and insert on to cake.

When I made the cake for Grandad we put a picture of the children on it instead.
