I made one of these once with 2 pudding bowl cakes, iced them both. Set the bottom one on the cake board, got the second one and turned it upside down to place ontop and it disintegrated into a million bits. God knows how, I think I hadn't bothered icing all the way underneath which would have at least held it in. I had to start again

MrsCarrot · 02/09/2007 17:03

I made this with two pudding bowls. It was the recipe from the womans weekly birthday cake book, in most shops I think. I used butter icing and drew windows on with an icing pen and perched two fairies on the top. It was quite fiddly though.

PFNM - I have the book with the toadstool house in it. You are welcome to borrow it if you like. Only prob is, we are moving house on fri this week and although I know which box the book ios in, might be a struggle to actually get it in my hands so to speak.
Do you need it urgently? When could I get it to you? Its a pretty easy cake, BTW.

Its the Oz WW book that others have mentioned on the thread BTW.

Beauregard · 02/09/2007 21:59

Ooh Slouchy that would be great thankyou!
I don't need it urgently as dd's birthday not until November,i like to plan ahead, lol.
Good luck with the move.
By the way i knew slouchy was you cos i remembered the name thread, trouble is i do think that Slouchypouch sounds better

I would still like the copies off Flibberty though as i can drop flour on them and not on your book.
Knowing me i will probably prefer one of the other cakes in the book though.

You are all bad influences - now I want the AWW book as well. Could some kind owner of said book look through it and tell me if there is anything vaguely space related - otherwise I have to make moon complete with space shuttle in orbit out of one of my current books as that is what DS has chosen!

As for the "easy" title of my book - they are time consuming but really not hard. I have successfully made sorting cube, tractor and monster for DS. Granted they never look exactly like the pictures in the book, but what does, and DS has always been happy with them

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:11

Just caught up! Kbear just told me you wanted a toadstool cake! The one I made is on my profile (I hope!) for a limited time only! I took the design from a book by Carol Deacon called Perfect Party Cakes Made Easy. HTH.

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:18

Stealth - there's a very easy U.F.O. one in the same book!

Beauregard · 02/09/2007 22:19

wow that is fab!

MaureenMLove - snap we did that one too for dd1 5th party. WE did cheat and buy the fairies though from Ebay.

stealthsquiggle · 02/09/2007 22:22

Maureen - I assume you mean your Carol Deacon one? The toadstool looks identical to the one in the Debbie Brown book I have! Is it a cute UFO? DS has ordered that for him and a daisy (complete with bee) for DD...

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:31

Yes, the Carol Deacon one. I'm sure I've got the other book too, but I must have lent it to someone, can't find it. The UFO is basically a round cake, cut in half through the middle. One piece is carved to make a mound shape to sit in the middle of the other one. Then its covered with white fondant icing and little windows and various other spaceship like things stuck on it! Then there's a green alien climbing on it. The square cake board is covered in dark blue icing with white stars and moons all over it. Given time, I could probably scan the picture in, but I need to find the lead for my scanner tomorrow!

stealthsquiggle · 02/09/2007 22:34

The moon and spaceship DS wants and the daisy he says DD wants both use a ball-shaped cake tin. Have you ever used one and do they work (I know I could hire one, probably for long enough to do both, but I am a bit nervous about decorating spherical cakes!)

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:38

I'm good, but I don't think I'm that good! I think I'd worry that the cake isn't cooked in the middle as well. That bothers me, when I do the toadstool one and I've made it about 7 or 8 times for various people! I wouldn't know HOW to start decorating it!

stealthsquiggle · 02/09/2007 22:42

Maureen - you do realise I am likely to bug you on an annual basis now, as I have spent 4 years specialising in "boy" cakes - plus dragon for DM (which is a cool cake if you ever need one!), duck for DF (don't do it!) and a few others - now I need to learn to do "girl" cakes and you are my nominated expert!

I think I might rent the ball and make one as a trial (and just eat it!) - I need to adapt the recipe I usually use for shaped cakes anyway, as DS will only eat chocolate cake [sigh]

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:43

I was about to tell you about some lovely cup cakes I nicked from someone on here, which are a bit alien too, but I've just remembered it was you!

stealthsquiggle · 02/09/2007 22:45

Did they like your monsters, BTW?

eidsvold · 02/09/2007 22:48

i did a fab flower one for my dd1's 4th birthday party - nice and easy - easy to serve as we were in the local park for our party.

Pic on profile.

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:49

Yes they did, thanks! I've just put a couple more girlie cakes on my profile and all this talk of cakes has reminded me that my dd will be 12 in 4 weeks! What am I going to make her this year!! Its all very well being supermum, but I've got to keep up the standard every year!

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:50

Love the flowers! You may have solved my problem already!

eidsvold · 02/09/2007 22:53

in the AWW one there is for boys:

zappo the alien
snake
sheriff badge
ghost
hard hat
spooky castle
frog
pirate ship
spider on web
funny cupcake faces
dragon
train
party pinata
pirates dagger
photo frame one
jungle fever
whale
wizards hat
creepy crawly cup cakes
echidna ice cream cake

MaureenMLove · 02/09/2007 22:55

eidsvold - are they all butter icing cakes in the AWW?

eidsvold · 02/09/2007 22:56

Maureen - so easy - you can use different coloured icing on the cup cakes - and I figure 3 and 4yo do better with cupcakes than a piece of cake.

Then everyone gets the same amount iyswim.

I cheated and used ready made icing.

The stalks are made of fondant icing with green food colouring kneaded in.

I also put a ribbon to tie the bunch together.

I also managed to get some butterflies to decorate the stalk part of the bunch.
