Vegetarian sandwich fillings

Hi,

My nearly 10 year old DD has told me she'd like to be a vegetarian, and I am more than happy to supoort this as I myself am trying to eat and buy less meat and dairy.

She has packed lunches at school and while I have quite a few options (pasta salad, muffin pizza, etc) I'm wondering about what to put in sandwiches and wraps.

What other vegetarian sandwich fillings are there, apart from egg or cheese?

My DD has hummus and salad, falafal wraps or smoked salmon and cream cheese (she's pescatarian) for her packed lunches. We also do rice salad, pesto pasta with grated cheese and sometimes home made sushi.

I make various lentil pate combinations..onions, garlic mushrooms, etc.

Houmous
Nut butters (maybe not for school)
Marmite
Grated and cheese, with a handful of raisins scatters over makes for a decent wrap
Roasted veg (with crumbled feta or goats cheese)

MarshmallowsOnToast · 01/11/2019 16:31

Mozzarella, sundried tomatoes & pesto (or you can get pesto flavoured mayo).

ColdRainAgain · 01/11/2019 16:31

Sorry, that's grated carrot and cheese

MarshmallowsOnToast · 01/11/2019 16:33

Might not be the sort of thing you're after but the quorn crispy nuggets (like chicken nuggets) are surprisingly really nice & I'm a meat lover.

I sometimes have them in a wrap with salad & Nando's peri mayonnaise. If I'm feeling flush then I add Haloumi too. Yum yum!

Peanut butter
Mashed chickpea/lentil/spices/veg things

There are some great veg pates with cucumber/Tom etc.
Salad with guacamole.
Falafel with hummus/salad
Veg sausages sliced with salad/sliced toms etc
Veg bacon as a blt (it’s got much better than it used to be)
Good luck op !

Dd loves cauldron marinated tofu pieces on a wrap with salad. Our Cauldron felafel.

lemonjam · 01/11/2019 16:37

My dd loves sage and onion slices (one of the fake meat type things), humous with grated carrot, and chickpea mayo (better than it sounds!).
I like veggie pâté, homemade cheese savoury (grated cheese carrot and onion with mayo, I use vegan) and it sounds super boring but I actually really like a salad sandwich!
From the shops I love an onion bhaji wrap.

grew up in Australia eons ago Grin dare I say one of the favourite sandwich fillings was baked beans - particularly curried baked beans with sultanas - you have to scoop them out of the sauce a bit or they do go a bit soggy! but I can remember liking them! Actually you can do a wrap with salad & add them (we always use to have cold bake beans with salad - instead of coleslaw/humus type thing) Otherwise - cold rice salad with mixed beans & whatever fruit ie pineapple bits. clementine bits,) veg soup in thermos with chunky bread. Does your dc eat quorn because than you can do quorn (or other veg sausage) sandwiches

theneverendinglaundry · 01/11/2019 16:44

Wow, thanks for the treat ideas! I'll run them all by her and see what she fancies.

Waitrose do a range of Taifun flavoured tofu (basil/ almond/ tomato) which you can slice up in sarnies. Can anyone link me to a nice veggie pate. We are also a bit bored with the houmous/ peanut butter/ falafels routine.

theneverendinglaundry · 01/11/2019 16:49

@marshmallowsontoast that sounds amazing and I want to eat one now!!!

Must say I’ve been been vegetarian for decades - all adult life. I’ve missed mustard more than anything. Until Quorn ham slices were developed - have ‘ham’ sandwiches with lashings of mustard every now and then !

BlouseAndSkirt · 01/11/2019 16:53

Mashed avocado (add lemon juice and salt to prevent going grey)
Mushroom pate
NZ Asaragus Rolls: a cooked asparagus spear rolled up in buttered thin sliced bread, crust cut off.

HeronLanyon · 01/11/2019 16:55

drdeluxe I like the ones Holland and Barrett sell in tubes - tofu pate - can’t remember brand name - comes in original, herb (not great) and spicy Mexican bean. Plus most supermarkets have more expensive veg pates usually near the more expensive hummus/falafels etc.

HeronLanyon · 01/11/2019 16:58

I just made myself snack of pita with peanut butter and gherkins. I then had a large I’ll- advised chunk of cheddar Cut on the board with gherkin juice still on. I have definitely discovered new taste sensation ! Strong cheese and pickle juice - not sure how to translate that into sandwich stuff.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/11/2019 17:07

The best sarnie I've ever had in my life had onion bhaji, carrot chutney, raita and salad in it - I keep meaning to try to replicate it.

I like Quorn ham slices with grainy mustard and watercress

Or the sage and onion slices with cold stuffing and a bit of apple sauce in a cob

Egg and watercress

1970s sarnie - soft bread, lettuce, cucumber, thinly sliced radishes, spring onions and salad cream

Corneysjazzband · 01/11/2019 17:14

Tartex is easy - a yeast based pate that comes in tubes. I have seen it in supermarkets but I think I last bought it in a health food shop. Be careful with pesto as it is not usually vegetarian unfortunately.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/11/2019 17:15

Banana and honey on wholemeal. Lovely!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/11/2019 17:16

Scala do a veggie red pesto (yum) and I don’t like tartex all that much but the other one on the metal tube (begins with a G).

@DrDeluxe

Tartex mushroom - 10/10

annienone · 01/11/2019 17:42

Cucumber with garlic and herb/chive Philadelphia. I'm not vegetarian and this is one of my favourite sandwiches!

AgeBeforeBeauty · 01/11/2019 17:46

Cream cheese and red pepper, with or without tomato
