Vegetarian sandwich fillings

Hi,

My nearly 10 year old DD has told me she'd like to be a vegetarian, and I am more than happy to supoort this as I myself am trying to eat and buy less meat and dairy.

She has packed lunches at school and while I have quite a few options (pasta salad, muffin pizza, etc) I'm wondering about what to put in sandwiches and wraps.

What other vegetarian sandwich fillings are there, apart from egg or cheese?

“What other vegetarian sandwich fillings are there, apart from egg or cheese?“

LOADS!

Although I must admit I do like an egg “mayo” sarnie except made with salad cream instead of mayo, yum! And I also love a good cheddar and tomato sandwich.

But...

Dirty word on here with some but quorn do a great range of “deli” slices which are basically subs for deli meat sandwich fillers, flavours include chicken, turkey and stuffing, smoked ham, pepperoni... other veggie brands do similar too. Just use as you would the meat equivalents.

Quorn and others also do “picnic” type foods (which I know you haven’t asked for but you’re clearly open to not just sandwiches) like mini “scotch eggs” but the meat part is quorn with chopped egg in middle, cocktail sausages, sausage rolls... and other brands do “bites” which are like mini falafel but in loads of different flavours I shop with Sainsburys and like the “great food” bites.

Back to sandwiches:

Houmous
Roasted veg
Marmite
Veg sausages with onion or sundried tomatoes or a little chutney
Heinz sandwich spread
There are loads of veggie pâtés on the market now

If you go away from standard sliced bread and use rolls, wraps etc then:

Falafel
Tofu chunks with diced veggies, or quorn do “diced” “chicken fillets” which work great in wraps
Avocado I think works better in a crusty roll than sliced bread, with veggie bacon or diced tomato and onion, maybe a splash of Henderson’s relish.
I love and have for many years tartex yeast spreads, so much so a tube never lasts more than a few hours if I get it! Like a smooth pate, savoury/umami type taste depending which flavour you go for, best on toast but also works well with crusty rolls and crackers, I can quite easily munch through an unseemly amount of crackers if topped with this stuff very moreish.

Granovita veggie pate is good too.

My dd isn’t veggie but her favourite sandwich is mayo, quorn smoky ham flavour, grated cheddar cheese, and a little sauerkraut.

Another popular one in this house is Linda McCartney sausages fried (yea not healthy 😂) in the split lengthways halfway through cooking method, cranberry sauce (spread on the bread/rolls instead of butter style) and thinly sliced red onion

Another is in a “sub” type roll, cream cheese, diced celery and chopped cooked veggie bacon. Mix the 3 filling ingredients together in a bowl then spread in the roll.

DD's faves are wraps with grated carrot, grated cheese and sultanas or peanut butter and grated carrot wrap. Also has pitta and dips in lunchbox and soup in a flask.

Thank you again everyone, some delicious ideas here that I definitely have not thought of!

She has tried the quorn fake sliced meat before but didnt like it.... but is open to trying new things so I bet I could get her to try most of these suggestions at least once!

I love cream cheese mixed with chives and spring onions, spread generously on fresh bread with slices of cucumber. Filling and refreshing.

Oh yes - I do that but use chopped gherkins and dill mmmmmmmmm.

My DS went pescatarian at 10yrs old..... I insisted he continued to eat fish as growing very fast. He loves smoked salmon and cream cheese (when I can afford it), prawn mayonaise and bizarrely peanut butter and sliced banana.

Brie andango chutney on Christy bread.

One of my favourite veggie sandwich fillings is a pitta or wrap with leftover roasted vegetables and either some houmous, tzatziki, or avocado, salsa/ sour cream (whichever of those I have). Other than that, it usually involves cheese- Brie and cranberry, tomato and mozzarella, cheddar cheese and pineapple or cucumber. You can get dairy free cheese in the supermarket and I find them ok in a sandwich.

➼ Apple and cheddar
➼ Cream cheese and cucumber
➼ Egg salad
➼ Falafel, hummus, a little bit of pickled beetroot and a bit of grated of carrot is lovely in a wrap or a sandwich.
➼ Fried eggplant slices and diced mushroom with some caramelized onions - so simple but so good
➼ Grilled goats cheese with fig and honey
➼ One of my close college friends got me hooked on potato baazi wraps made with roti but I’ve also just made the potato baazi to use it for not just wraps, but also sandwiches and pita bread
➼ Margherita grilled cheese sandwich
➼ Ploughman’s sandwich without the cold meat
➼ Peanut butter and jam - there are a few vegetarian friendly brands
➼ Roasted veg and hummus

Quorn do lots of things, ham/chicken/turkey/ bacon slices, scotch eggs, cocktail sausage

When my daughter went vegan she missed tuna mayo sandwiches. I started making fake tuna sandwiches with chickpeas, they are lovely and make a change from hummus. I particularly like the addition of nori. simple-veganista.com/chickpea-of-sea-salad-sandwic/

But for days that you can’t be arsed; cream cheese and jarred/tinned jalapeño sandwiches are delicious. Or even just tomato with smoked salt.

Houmous with grated carrot and apple
Felafel with avocado
Grilled red peppers and mushrooms with salad
Banana and peanut butter
