A few weeks ago i cryed the whole day because my sister asked to borrow my video card!!!!

mrsflowerpot · 23/09/2004 20:48

mmmm marmite on toast, nothing better . DH won't come near me if I've eaten it (useful on occasion...)

I remember giving marmite to a class of French school kids in a lesson when we were talking about english food. You would have thought I was making them drink petrol. Serve 'em right for all the sarky remarks about british cooking!

Just remembered - put it on toast and scrambled egg on top - lovely

prettycandles · 23/09/2004 21:13

My first birthday cake was a double decker marmite sandwich cut into a circle with a single candle apparently. I still love it, so does dd, but dp hates it.

However I have just remembered one other thing about marmite. My dad who was rather pedantic insisted that I had to pronounce it MARMEET - apparently that is the proper pronunciation of the pot that gives the spread its name. It took me years after I'd left home to pronounce it MARMIGHT - and at last feel normal!

58 posts on Marmite...is there anything you lot don't talk about?!

merrygoround · 23/09/2004 23:18

Marmite is very important and does tend to divide people, as you now obviously know

marthamoo · 23/09/2004 23:20

Thick white toast, lots of butter, and the merest scraping of Marmite - can't believe anyone eats it out of the jar with a spoon...yeaccck!

merrygoround · 23/09/2004 23:23

I agree with you MM - dp as a marmite hater once made dd her marmite sandwich and I had to grab it out of her hands as he had no idea that you (in my humble opinion) just spread it on really thinly. As for eating out of a jar, I am amazed.

Oooooooooh!! Prettycandles. I've only got smooth. Know what you mean

Frenchgirl · 24/09/2004 07:41

YUM but not english marmite... Sanitarium marmite imo is far superior.

i like it with butter on toast... with sliced apple on toast and with melted cheese.. which we call mouse traps... YUM

can use it like stock in a casserole

muddaofsuburbia · 24/09/2004 09:48

Fascinating Marmite fact!!!!!!1

Put some marmit on a plate and hit it repeatedly with a teaspoon. IT WILL TURN WHITE!

edam · 24/09/2004 09:48

Have just had marmite toast, lovely. Even better on crumpets. And useful as a base for chilli etc. if you are veggie. Add it to most savoury dishes, tbh. Even sometimes make myself a Marmite drink a la Bovril.
Thanks for the tip about mashed potato, will have to try that

Papillon · 24/09/2004 09:49

wow really muddaofsuburbia .. will have to tell Wobblyknicks she loves experiments like that!

wobblyknicks · 24/09/2004 09:51

Thanks paps and mudda - would try that but I haven't got any marmite, will have to get some later and try!!!

Bunglie · 24/09/2004 10:42

It must just be marmite....I have just tried it with Tesco's Yeast Exract, and it did not go white but left a sticky mess and a spoon stuck on a saucer....it did seem to thicken.
(have left it on the side for someone else to wash up and I am going to deny all knowledge of it )
I must get some Marmite today, the cheapo Yeast extract is no comparisom......

Papillon · 24/09/2004 11:08
