Why?????
by which I mean: what is its point? and what can you do with it?

Kayleigh - I love it but could not eat it off a spoon - yuck makes me shudder to think about it - DP and DD hate it and say I smell like the toilet when I have eaten it - NICE!!

I do drink bottles of Gaviscon though!! Advance is best although consistency reminds me of something entirely differnt

Angeliz · 23/09/2004 17:06

Twinkie it's the consistency of Gaviscon that makes me gag!!

Does bring back some VEEEEERRRRRRRRRYYYY distant memories though!!

Frenchgirl · 23/09/2004 17:10

eat it from the jar???? are you insane??? I had never even heard of Marmite before coming here (wonder why...). A greek friend was staying in a B&B and the first morning decided to have toast with that unknown 'chocolate spread' (marmite in fact....) he saw on the table......and ran to the toilet as he had just had a 'delicious' piece of toast with a heavy dose of marmite on it!!!

I love twigletts though

Love it! On toast with lots of butter or in a sandwich with cheddar or Philedelphia cheese or peanut butter

mckenzie · 23/09/2004 17:22

stop right now or else I'm going to be having about 4 slices of toast and butter with oodles of marmite for my dinner tonight.
I love marmite! When i lived abroad my mum had to send me monthly parcels of it. The postage cost her a small fortune.

Aero · 23/09/2004 17:33

Hooray - another bovril fan! Tastes great on toast and like Twiglett, I add banana or philadelphia or tomatoes or baked beans or eggs...........I could go on forever. I've been brought up on it and have inflicted my children despite the high amount of salt. I've been known to have bovril withdrawal symptoms when we've run out - similar to PMT!!!
ps I like marmite too, but not as much.

bundle · 23/09/2004 17:33

imo marmite superior to both bovril & vegemite. discuss.

Bunglie · 23/09/2004 17:35

I used to LOVE (sorry Twiglett...will whisper ) Marmite with cucumber sarnies...best bit is the cucumber makes you burp so you can taste it all over again without eating tons

Frenchgirl · 23/09/2004 17:59

bundle, that should be which one is the least repulsive. Who ever thought Marmite smell could be appetising?????
Dh, when he lived in spain, used to get his mum to send him marmite parcels too. He is forbidden to bring it with him when we go to france though.....

Bunglie · 23/09/2004 18:32

Vegemite I always think has a 'gritty' consistency and Bovril is runny and only for gravy or drinking but Marmite...that's for eating out of the jar with a teaspoon when no one is looking!

Frenchgirl · 23/09/2004 19:50

bunglie!!!!! not you as well!!!!

OP posts:
popsycal · 23/09/2004 19:51

on hot buttered toast
yum
might have to go and make some now

Beccarollover · 23/09/2004 20:06

ditto popsy, off to make some

Hulababy · 23/09/2004 20:20

Horrid stuff - yuk. Neither me or DH like it at all.

DD likes it on toast though.

Bunglie · 23/09/2004 20:20

Yep! "I am a secret Marmit eater...Alright"
as they say
You either love it or hate it. I love it and sometimes crave it, I think it must be the salt.
Does anyone remember Bovril crisps....Yum!

marmite, lovely, but only liked it as an adult. Hated it as a child.
Bovril is melted down cow! yuk!!
Now, what about peanut butter- there's a smell to make me gag.

expatkat · 23/09/2004 20:39

I've learned to love many UK delicacies since moving here: Christmas pudding, proper pub food, warm beer. I ache & yearn for these things when I'm away for too long. . .

But I am AFRAID of marmite. It looks like it will kill me.

laa · 23/09/2004 20:42

Yum yum. Marmite, hummous and cheddar or Jarlsberg sandwiches are fantastic! Expecially if you add a touch of cucumber. I love Gaviscon too - the liqourice flavour. By the way, I'm pregnant for the third time, with considerable food cravings and I cry when I watch the golf (which I usu. hate)because I keep thinking how skillful they are. What is happening to me...?! Maybe I shouldn't think about any further pregnancies!

prettycandles · 23/09/2004 20:42

I've always loved Marmite...mmmmm. How wonderful therefore that I craved it during pregnancy ! A bit of Marmite on buttered white toast - and the morning sickness would ease within seconds.

Unfortunately dh loathes it, so I usually try to eat it only after he has left. The poor thing had to learn to tolerate it while I was pg and having it for breakfast every day and several times a day, plus getting turned on by my hormones and kissing him with Marmitey breath!

Angeliz · 23/09/2004 20:42

LOL laa at the golf........i cry at ANYTHING nowadays but GOLF?????

Bunglie · 23/09/2004 20:43

Yum! Sobernow...That sounded great....
I mix it with veg like bubble and squeek and fry it but my fave has to be Marmite and cucumber or marmite and anchovie sarnies

laa · 23/09/2004 20:45

God, I know. And the Olympic games opening ceremony. I cried at the Sydney one too when I was pregnant with no. 1! I was going to watch the Panarama programme last night about prem. babies, but DH practicaly vetoed it on account of my emotional state!n Roll on Feb. when I can return to normal and walk away from the golf without a tear in my eye!
