Frozen Fruit - Any good?

I keep seeing more and more frozen fruit in stores. Today in Sainsbury's I saw frozen avocado, pineapple and mango (not in same pack I should add). Has anyone tried this new wave of frozen fruits and any recommendations? Thanks

I put frozen raspberries on cereal - they make the milk nice and cold! And I use frozen berries for muffins and things like that. They work really well.

Frozen avocado is absolutely grim, I think it's sold to be used in smoothies rather than to be eaten.

We use bags and bags of frozen fruit, eat straight from the freezer, use on yogurt, breakfast cereal etc. Haven't tried avocado, strawberries go mushy and are only really good for smoothies but otherwise all good. Dark cherries are my favourite.

I use frozen fruit for baking all the time. Frozen blueberries are great in yoghurt. I love frozen cherries as well. Agree that the strawberries aren't great but raspberries are brilliant

I use frozen soft fruit for smoothies, smoothie bowls and cheesecakes . It works out cheaper than buying fresh, obviously last longer and tastes as good.

I prefer fresh fruit for porridge and cereals because of the texture.

I use frozen blueberries and frozen raspberries from Asda - they are really great.

Thanks folks. I am bit disappointed that avocado is grim. I love avocado but it is a bit of a faff to prepare. Good to hear what is good and what they work well in... I have tried frozen blackberries in porridge which was nice....

I use them for smoothies, on cereal, dropped into cooking pancakes, muffins and at the moment, for making ice lollies.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 25/07/2019 20:34

Frozen blueberries are lovely, also cherries.

I'm interested to know what form your avocado preparation takes that's a faff, I slice round lengthways then twist the two halves apart. Bang the blade of the knife into the stone and twist it out, take a teaspoon or dessertspoon and run it around the inside of the skin and the flesh pops out in one piece. Couldn't be easier!

jewel1968 · 25/07/2019 21:52

Myimag... That is what I do too. I guess I am lazy and love the idea of avocado being easily available. Also the times I cut into it and it is not perfectly ripe and you don't always know until you cut into it.

Well, yes, I do agree that an unripe avocado is very disappointing!

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/07/2019 06:41

I just scoop the stone out with the spoon before I scoop the flesh out.

Hairwizard · 28/07/2019 14:20

Great for smoothies, never tried baking with frozen fruit, must try it.

Snugglepiggy · 28/07/2019 20:26

Frozen fruit is great ,and cuts down on waste and cost.I defrost a handful of mixed berries for breakfast with oats and yogurt. Also make a quick pud with greek yogurt or icream. And recently made a lovely cherry eton mess.Haven't tried mango but this makes me want to try other fruits.

AdoraBell · 28/07/2019 20:32

I use frozen berries on porridge/granola and yoghurt. Strawberries for smoothies as they go soft once defrosted.

Never tried frozen avocado though.

BlueCowWonders · 28/07/2019 20:37

Frozen Bramley apples from Waitrose is my guilty secret! Often I put them in a cobbler/ crumble with frozen mixed berries. Almost instant pudding!
(In my defence I’m allergic to raw apples and need to wear gloves if I have to peel them)

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/07/2019 20:38

Use lots of frozen fruit here too. Morello cherries are my favourite but also buy blueberries, mixed berries, tropical fruits and apple. Throw some on a bowl with hot porridge on top and they thaw just enough to eat. Apple chunks are handy for quick pies/crumbles. Also use in yoghurt, pancakes, muffins etc.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/07/2019 20:40

bluecow Cross post about apples. Unexpected visitors think your a real domestic goddess rustling up a crumble for them Grin

ExpletiveDelighted · 28/07/2019 21:11

I've never seen frozen apples - which shop are they from?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/07/2019 21:28

I get them from Farmfoods. Most of their stuff is rubbish but frozen fruit and veg are great value - think the fruit is 3 bags for £5 I usually get apples, cherries and blueberries and they’re just as good as any other supermarket

ExpletiveDelighted · 29/07/2019 07:47

Thanks, we don't have a branch near us but I'll take a look in Iceland next time I'm in town, I usually get ours in Aldi or Sainsburys.

Crispmonster123 · 29/07/2019 07:49

I eat the frozen avocado. There’s no difference to me and it saves me throwing out the other half

AdoraBell · 30/07/2019 14:18

I’ve never tried the frozen advocates

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/07/2019 19:33

Ooh frozen apples, never seen them.

Frozen fruits of the forest crumble is my emergency desert. Also use fruits of the forest in sponge mix, in overnight oats, to top cheesecake and for Eton mess.

Tropical frozen fruit mix is used by my kids for smoothies.

FadedRed · 30/07/2019 19:40

TV programme yesterday - more vitamins etc in frozen fruit than in most fresh sold!
Avocado prep - you need one of these magic gadgets, less than thirty seconds to perfectly sliced avocado

Frozen Fruit - Any good?
Bluesheep8 · 04/08/2019 08:28
