Tomatoes that taste like bloody tomatoes!

Here I am in sunny sunny Greece and literally eating Greek salad for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Why why why can't we get tomatoes that are this tomatoey and delicious in the uk?! (Ok I know it's probably something to do with shit sunshine and air miles yadda yadda)

Also. Tomatoes in Greek salad are peeled!
I am going to attempt to recreate this dish when I'm home. Can someone point me to where I might be able to get tomatoes that are DECENT LOVELY AND TOMATOEY pls??

Ps. I am currently fuelled by cocktails so am happy to pay over the odds in my quest for tomatoey goodness

Tomatoes are the only thing I buy Tesco finest. The picolo ones actually have flavour.

Keeping them room temperature before you serve them helps. Once in the fridge they lose flavour. Agree with PP about piccolo tomatoes or on the vine for the best flavour.

And just pour boiling water over them to peel. When safe to handle, the skin just slips off in one piece

Perfect. I shall only buy finest toms from now on.

Simple things

I get good ones in my local farm shop but that probably doesn’t help you.
In the supermarket, Waitrose red choice or jack Hawkins are not bad.

I was gonna say you need to eat toms that have been grown in the sunshine, those are the best ones!

Tomatoes, hunks of local bread, local cheese, wine. DONE.

Same as pp I only buy finest tomatoes as the cheap ones taste of nothing ..Tesco finest are Lovely and worth the money !!

The problem with the tomatoes in the UK is that they are grown as fast as they can mostly using chemicals that is why they taste different compared to other parts of the world. Your best bet is to buy organic they taste a lot better compared to the standard tomatoes from uk supermarkets. Somewhere like riverford farms may sell them and they deliver aswell.

Salad tomatoes are always awful. I only buy vine ripened cherry tomatoes, only ones that tastes right.

Yep. Grow your own. My fil grows tomatoes. They are amazing!

Thanet Earth tomatoes are very good. Their greenhouses are amazing. I believe they supply Tesco finest all the way from Margate!
The best English outdoor tomato is the one picked off your own tomato plant at the end of a long sunny day but whatever the source keep them out of the fridge. And keep the rock salt grinder handy.

also go for heritage varieties if you can. they might look funny (sometimes not even red) but have lots more flavour.

I love the Santini tomatoes from M&S.

Organic ones taste like proper tomatoes. There's a horrible taste to others- probably due to the chemical fertilizers used to grow them.

You really get what you pay for with tomatoes, always vine ripened and heritage varieties where possible. Sniff the pack before you buy them! If they don’t smell like a lovely greenhouse full of tomatoes then they don’t taste of anything.

Sainsbury's taste the difference tomatoes are always lovely, I use the sundream ones in salads, they taste & smell like they have just come out of the greenhouse.

Yes to the M&S tomatoes! Also nigella’s Greek salad recipe has a good dressing!

Yes! I swear when I was younger they had a warm earthy smell and taste to them, now they just taste like water. I think it's the way they've been bred/grown commercially over the years to increase size and firmness or whatever but to the detriment of the taste.

Agree we get both of these.

I put them on a sunny windowsill to ripen properly, that helps.

Tesco Finest sugardrop etc are ok, but Marks & Spencer toms are even better!
