Here I am in sunny sunny Greece and literally eating Greek salad for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Why why why can't we get tomatoes that are this tomatoey and delicious in the uk?! (Ok I know it's probably something to do with shit sunshine and air miles yadda yadda)

Also. Tomatoes in Greek salad are peeled!
I am going to attempt to recreate this dish when I'm home. Can someone point me to where I might be able to get tomatoes that are DECENT LOVELY AND TOMATOEY pls??

Ps. I am currently fuelled by cocktails so am happy to pay over the odds in my quest for tomatoey goodness

I'm obsessed with lovely tomatoes too! I get them from M&S or from the food market and leave out of the fridge. My DP always takes the piss. I could live on Greek salads. The key I've found is good quality salt on the tomatoes and lashings of olive oil. I peel cucumber for the salad but not the tomatoes. Don't think I've ever seen them peeled in Greece and I've been all over. Where are you staying? I might try it next time!

To answer a Pp I'm in Mykonos so all the salads are kind of competing with each other for "youneekness and fanciness " wankiness

My fave was one that was caponata based (ie. bloody Italian) served in the (peeled) shell of a HUUUUUGE beef tomato kind of thing.

DH's favourite had spiralized cucumber in it and was very heavy on the tomatoes.

All very wanky but I love it.

We are going back to the fave Greek Salad Restaurant because we made friends with our waiter who kept plying us with shots and I will def harass him appropriately for the recipe Wink

Ours are growing in the green house they are the best tomatoes, but the type of tomato is important too. Beef tomatoes in Portugal with sardinhas and salad, heaven. They pick them green industrially then ripen with a gas, so no sunshine....

Here is a €20 partly eaten, room service Greek salad Grin. Tomatoes are of the smaller variety so have been left peeled.
Yum!
This salad has a surprising, yes subtle addition of fresh mint. And radishes?!

I’ve been buying Isle of Wight tomatoes from Ocado. Not organic but def seasonal (can’t get them in the winter). They are delicious - I keep them in a bowl on the counter & snack on them like grapes.

And look at the reviews Grin

I never buy fruit from the supermarket. It's nothing to do with sunshine, it's how they're grown.
We grow our own or buy from local nurseries where they are actually red rather than yellow or orange. They taste delicious.

Ooh thanks giant kitten have popped some in my Ocado trolley for when I get home

I buy tomatoes from organic box delivery ( Riverford, etc). They taste fantastic. A box of vegetables also has less plastic waste.

The only ones I really love are homegrown by my DM or DH. It's not difficult to grow them and once they start, you get absolutely loads! The really taste very tomatoey!

Home now and had a go at my first own, proper Greek salad.

I peeled the tomatoes and left them and the red onions soaking in the dressing for a couple of hours then added the peppers/cucumbers so they were crunchy. Pretty bloody tasty if I say so meself.

Dressing, for the PP who asked, I am informed (by kind slightly drunk waiter) is red wine vinegar, olive oil and oregano - simple yet effective!

Might've gone a bit overboard with the feta Grin but was also told it should be put in big blocks rather than crumbled so everyone can have their own big block. Seems fair!
