Inherited breadmaker with no instructions

I've been told 3 cups of flour, 3 cups of water, 1 sachet of yeast, 1 tbs oil, pinch of salt, 1 tsp sugar will work.
It doesn't. I've got a flat greasy looking lump of dough with lots of unmixed in flour. It is a hit with the garden birds though.
Can anyone help?
The breadmaker has no brand name.

It worked! The 3 cups flour and 3 cups water was way too much fluid. I used 400g flour, 225ml warm water, vegetable oil, sugar, salt, yeast, sultanas and got a delicious crusty fruit loaf.

The paddle mechanism was quite grimy too, so I think it was a combination of the paddle not working properly and a completely inaccurate recipe.

Who wants a slice of freshly baked bread and butter?

Thank you everyone who offered advice and provided links. Flowers

Not all bread makers are equal, I've had a couple of crap ones which were little used, a few months ago I forked out for a pricey Panasonic which is fabulous. Every loaf white, whole meal, fruit are fab and it also makes beautiful sourdough, I've made a couple of cakes too and they've been lovely. If you get the bread maker bug then a more expensive one is the way to go. Also to give your loaf an extra rise a teaspoon of vitamin c will make it much lighter.

I was given a free bread maker too and gave up on the thing actually baking the bread and now do what sack does above - treat it as a mixing/kneading/proofing machine, then turn out into a tin and bake in the oven to get bread that's a sensible shape and size. Otherwise I get a huge towering rectangle with big air holes in the top, dense at the bottom and a big hole torn out where the paddle went!!
