Inherited breadmaker with no instructions

I've been told 3 cups of flour, 3 cups of water, 1 sachet of yeast, 1 tbs oil, pinch of salt, 1 tsp sugar will work.
It doesn't. I've got a flat greasy looking lump of dough with lots of unmixed in flour. It is a hit with the garden birds though.
Can anyone help?
The breadmaker has no brand name.

Is there a serial number on the bottom that you can Google or stick a pic on here in case one now us has One?

Singlenotsingle · 16/04/2019 18:49

I bought mine on Ebay
330ml water
1.5 tbsp butter
1tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar (I use 1, not 2)
520gm bread flour
1.5 tsp dry yeast

You'll find all instruction manuals online if you just Google the code.

I hate breadmakers. I can give you a super easy bread recipe and you’ll never look back.

If you’re sure you followed all the instructions it sounds as if there’s something wrong with it. Did you hear the motor turning to knead the dough? Was it a cooked lump or a raw lump?

sackrifice · 16/04/2019 18:56

My recipe was always:
500g flour
320-350 g water [depending on how wet you like it, use 335g if you don't know.
8g/1pkt quick yeast
8g salt.

Bang it all in and press go.

Even better, use the breadmaker to knead it, once kneaded tip out onto floured surface and let it prove, then shape and prove again for an hour and cook in hot oven til done. Slash the top just before putting it in the oven.

This is the base of the machine.
Looks grim!
It was a cooked lump of dough with raw flour at the bottom.

Did you hear the paddle thing going round?
Did you remember to put the paddle thing in?
Have you got the paddle thing?

Singlenotsingle · 16/04/2019 19:29

It doesn't sound as though the paddle was working properly

LuckyLou7 · 16/04/2019 19:37

The paddle thing is built in and it was whirring around, I checked it a couple of times.
I'll give it another go before I send it to landfill.

I'd love a super-easy bread recipe though (without using a machine)

Sounds like it's not doing the stirring right, if it's got unmixed flour. Does the stirrer rotate smoothly? It won't move easily as you're turning the motor, but it should move smoothly not in a heave-crack!-crunch sort of way.

If it's crunchy, the motor's dead.

SpoonBlender · 16/04/2019 19:50

Waa! Sorry, awful slow xpost.

Singlenotsingle · 16/04/2019 20:08

I quite like my bread maker. It's basic, but the bread comes out very nice. I'm thinking of upgrading, but I won't offer to buy yours, OP!

BikeRunSki · 16/04/2019 20:13

the instruction manual is on eBay, but pricey

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/04/2019 20:16

Does it have a dough only setting? You could set it to make your dough and have a look to see if it works properly to that point.

I use my bread maker a couple of times a week but I tend to only use the dough setting and then take it out to shape, prove and bake in the oven. I know I could do the dough by hand but a frozen shoulder has left me a bit weak in the kneading department and I let the machine take the strain.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/04/2019 20:23

I used to have one of those (I think it's the same). Instructions can be downloaded here

LuckyLou7 · 17/04/2019 12:42

Thanks everyone. Second loaf is underway. I gave the whole machine a thorough scrub this morning and it seems to be doing what it's meant to. The kitchen smells delightful anyway.

free access for 14 days

The manual is there but it's the only free one I've found so far.
Good luck!

BlackCatSleeping · 17/04/2019 12:52

Try putting the water in before the flour. But it sounds like you’ve sorted it.

LuckyLou7 · 17/04/2019 12:56

It's not finished yet. I might still end up with a soggy lump of something only the birds will eat!

Also, if the yeast isn’t new, try buying new yeast. Yeast goes off quickly and is best kept in the fridge or freezer.

BlackCatSleeping · 17/04/2019 22:15

How did it go?

CherryCheezcake · 17/04/2019 22:21

Three cups of flour and three cups of water sounds very odd. I use 3 cups of flour and 1 and a bit cups of water
