Do you wash mushrooms?

I usually don't, just give them a wipe. My mother was horrified to learn this. What do others do?

Wipe, for sure. I'm a bit of a slattern by MN standards though.

FannyAndMoonFace · 06/12/2018 18:18

No I never have unless they're particularly muddy!

HardAsSnails · 06/12/2018 18:18

I just pick the big bits of compost off.

babysharkah · 06/12/2018 18:19

No! They'll just absorb all the water.

Jeffacake · 06/12/2018 18:19

Nope

NashvilleQueen · 06/12/2018 18:19

Nah

moredoll · 06/12/2018 18:19

Just wipe

simbobs · 06/12/2018 18:20

Nope, just wipe if required. They should never be washed.

SpoonBlender · 06/12/2018 18:21

I don't even wipe them, just knock off the chunks of not-earth-but-you-know-what-I-mean.

MeTigger · 06/12/2018 18:22

I peel mine, very satisfying

Destinysdaughter · 06/12/2018 18:22

Just wipe, if you wash them they'll absorb the water and go all slimy!

Lucked · 06/12/2018 18:24

Mushroom compost is sterilised prior to use so I just wipe/ pick off the worst of it.

PineappleTart · 06/12/2018 18:27

Happy to find this thread and see it's not just me Grin

constantlywingingit · 06/12/2018 18:36

My DM peels them and is horrified I don't.

bagpiss · 06/12/2018 18:37

I have an ikea mushroom brush, posh me 😂

RavenLG · 06/12/2018 18:37

Nah, just give them a flick if they’re particularly soily. I’m a bit of a tramp though I don’t clean a lot of veggies

BumbleyBum · 06/12/2018 18:39

Life’s to short to wash mushrooms

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/12/2018 04:38

Never, just wipe off any soil.
I don't wash fruit either and I'm fairly sure I've not died yet.

Notevenmyrealname · 07/12/2018 04:41

I rinse them under a running tap to get soil off but no more than that.

Oblomov18 · 07/12/2018 04:42

I don't even wipe them.

scrivette · 07/12/2018 04:44

No washing or wiping here. I do wash grapes though as I think they taste funny otherwise, I don't really bother with other fruit though.

gastropod · 07/12/2018 05:25

I wash chanterelles/girolles as you can't get the grit out otherwise. But button/field mushrooms just need a wipe if there's visible dirt. If not I don't even bother with that!

PhilomenaSnowflakeButterfly · 07/12/2018 05:29

You should wipe them with a damp kitchen towel, as they get waterlogged.

noenergy · 07/12/2018 05:33

I wash them because of the soil, I know u r not supposed to but I couldn't use them without washing them, a lot of my relatives peel them

HoppingPavlova · 07/12/2018 05:33

Nope, don’t wash or wipe. My mum used to peel them and is absolutely horrified I don’t, convinced we will all die but we haven’t yet Grin. Having said that she does not eat mushrooms anymore as she can’t be bothered to peel them any longer (being quite elderly does not help) and she doesn’t trust anyone else would do it right.
