I usually don't, just give them a wipe. My mother was horrified to learn this. What do others do?

If you fry mushrooms after rinsing under a tap any water will be driven off. There is anyway quite a lot of water in a mushroom which cooks away. See how they shrink! I can't imagine that the top of a mushroom would absorb much water in any case. The underside, maybe. If the mushrooms are going into a casserole they will be in hot water/stock for hours.
Does everyone pull off the stalks? That's what I want to know.

Peel if possIble; scrub with a green pan-scrubber under running water if not Grin Wouldn't dream of eating raw either!

Me and dh have multiple arguments over this.

He washes and I do nothing. I say washing makes them soggy he says having little speckles of poo soil on them is grim. I reckon it's hygienic poo soil and don't care.

Maybe I will buy him a mushroom brush for xmas. I didn't know of such things until now.

I have a mushroom brush, I find it knocks the dirt off better than wiping them does.

I barely even wipe them.... Flick off any big bits of soil with the knife and trim off the end of the stalk then eat it I need to buy double the amount of mushrooms, I eat so many raw there's never enough for the dinner.

I have peeled mine for years, just started just wiping

I wash them, even though I know you're not supposed to. The fear of crunching on a bit of grit is too overpowering. Or a clod of compost dissolving into a sauce! Envy

I wash them. Chop them up and then pop them in a colander and toss them in cold water

I assumed they use pesticides and manure to grow them

@PhilomenaSnowflakeButterfly it's about 1g of Fibre per 100g and 3g of Protein. For that fibre count it's worth keeping the skin on.

Just knock any obvious mud off - I must admit to not washing vegetables in general - yes I know pesticides but compared to other things it's minor

I only wash loose mushrooms not packed ones.

Mushrooms are rich in Vitamin B C D Selenium. So much more.

You’re not supposed to wash them as they absorb the water. Wiping is fine

Can't think of any veg I clean properly other than if it's covered in compost etc. Even then I'll just give it a cursory wipe.
Never washed a mushroom in my life

Mick aren't they full of protein and fibre?

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 07/12/2018 06:58

There's very little nutrition in a mushroom and where it is, is under the skin. So I don't peel because I'm lazy of this. Soaking in water will leech them out too, make the mushrooms all soggy and put to much water into the recipe.

Just a wipe with wet kitchen roll, trim the dirty end of the stalk off.

Does anyone else eat a few raw while they prep?

No? Me neither. Blush

I wash all of my fruit and vegetables! It's just a habit though.

Nope, just pick the bits off if needed.. I rarely wash fruit or veg unless I can see it really needs it (do NOT tell DH, please!)

Anyone else noticed that when mushrooms get a bit rotten they taste better?
