Do you peel mushrooms?

incywincybitofa · 24/07/2018 20:14

I don't eat them they're yuck but DH and DS love them.
When I cook any mushrooms I peel them but recipes never seem to mention peeling them.
Am I right or wrong

No peeling. Life is too short.

NoelHeadbands · 24/07/2018 20:16

No never.

Not really bothered if I should be either, because I also don’t eat them!

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2018 20:18

No, I don't know you would.

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2018 20:18

Don't know why you would

user1483387154 · 24/07/2018 20:19

Nope. Why would You?

Vitalogy · 24/07/2018 20:21

Yes, sadly I do. I think you're just supposed to brush any soil off with a brush.

incywincybitofa · 24/07/2018 20:21

I don't know why I do it, I just do. I think I assumed the skin was dirty and a thorough scrub pretty much ends up peeling them anyway

Well like I say, I’m not the one eating them so...

Knittedfairies · 24/07/2018 20:22

I don’t if they’re fresh, but peel them if they are a bit....elderly.

thedevilinablackdress · 24/07/2018 20:23

You're only supposed to wipe them lightly

AlbertThingy · 24/07/2018 20:24

I always peel.

Thought it was the norm Blush

incywincybitofa · 24/07/2018 20:26

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

OP posts:
andantecantabile · 24/07/2018 20:27

I do the same as Knittedfairies

BloodyForeigner · 24/07/2018 20:34

Fuck, no, life’s too short to peel a mushroom. But then I also don’t iron.

TheWoollybacksWife · 24/07/2018 20:34

I wash/wipe button mushrooms and peel bigger ones.

Etymology23 · 24/07/2018 20:35

I give them a vague wash to get rid of any obvious dirt, but was always taught not to scrub them vigorously enough to peel them.

MangoApplePear · 24/07/2018 20:35

My mum always did and so I do too. 🙂

Racecardriver · 24/07/2018 20:37

I used to but then stopped. Haven't noticed any difference.

falaffels · 24/07/2018 21:00

It's never occurred to me to! Mushrooms don't have a skin as such, do they?

I get it for veggies with a tough/ tasteless skin, but mushrooms are the same all the way through aren't they?

Off to peer in the vegetable rack...

Bluntness100 · 24/07/2018 22:21

I think people used to years ago. I've no idea why. I assumed it was like people used to think the Earth was flat 🤣

I recall my husband used to as his mum did, as said, I'm not sure why, I don't and he hasn't for many a year, as, well a/it's a faff and b/he's noticed they don't taste any difference.

You're not supposed to wash them as they absorb water nor scrub them, just give them a very quick rinse in a colander and a wipe and you're good to go.

There really is no need to peel them.

incywincybitofa · 24/07/2018 23:04

I used to think mushrooms were grown in horse manure. No idea why, but that probably contributes to me peeling them

Big Portobello type ones, yes. Tiny little button mushrooms, no. Ain't nobody got time for that!

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 24/07/2018 23:11

Yes I do.
