Overweight child, lunch box ideas ?

DC3 now nearly 10 is overweight. It started slowly in year 2 and now in year 5 she is undeniably overweight. Her older brother is really skinny and her older sister normal weight. She loves her food. Not sure what to do, but I need to do something. Her lunch box usually contains a ham or chicken bagel sandwich, a packet of crisps, a kitkat and a caprisun. I can do better clearly. Carrot sticks? Fruit? Replacing the drink with water? What about treats? And she goes to breakfast club, should I limit what she can get? And after school club, she eats quite a lot there too. Then will have dinner at home. What are healthy snacks alternatives? I feel bad should know that but I don't really have a clue.

I send my 10yo dd with a small sandwich (1 slice bread) or small roll, pot of veg sticks, 2 x fruit portions (1 for morning break), small savoury snack (couple of cocktail sausages, mini scotch egg) and a sugar free jelly - the latter is about 10 calories, clearly chemical rubbish but she feels like she's had a treat. The small sandwich plus savoury snack are probably the same calories as a full sandwich but she prefers the variety.

She drinks a flask of sugar free squash. capri sun is one of the higher sugar squashes so an easy swap. I know lots of people frown on sugar free stuff due to articificial sweetners, but I think if you have a kid who gains weight easily it's the lesser of two evils.

Screw - great suggestions! Good point re making sure they feel like they've had a treat.

Do you prepare any of it in advance?

What pp said about after school food- I got a bit chubby around 12, I think mostly because I was having essentially a dinner in after-school care and then a family dinner later on. It's just too much food unless you're very active.

Thanks a lot for all your replies, sorry for delay, I agree that there is lot wrong with what we are doing and we should be able to get back on track within a few weeks by making the changes suggested. Water, popcorn, bread and healthy pudding for a start, she shouldn't notice the changes and I'll ask what they had in after school club, if it's left overs from lunch no dinner at home on top. And sports after school would be ideal, I'll see what she could do.

i notice you said she is getting self contious now.i don't want to be preachy I'm more than sure you mindful of her feelings but this is something to be so careful of now obviously. with the food thing especially and changes your needing to make.she will be so sensitive of this happening and whether you mean it to or not at this age everything will seem like a nock to how she looks.so make sure she knows this is to be a healthier family.that the changes aren't seemed as punishment or to change how she looks just to make sure you all the best versions of yourself.
I remember this age and even if someone looked at your wrong it would play on the I'm ugle and fat thoughts lol.
keep reminding her shes beautiful and that the food and health isn't exclusive to that or how she looks and weighs.
keep asking her what fruits veggies things she might want.not forced restriction etc.
instead of like saying she cant have asc meal because its too much could you just say you want her to have meal altogether with you guys.
you obviously love and care sooo much for her wellbeing so as long as she sees this and knows this she will be ok.
have you talked to her bout this.has she mentioned anything shed like to try or worries about it?

Point taken about insisting on health rather than looks, this is clearly my agenda anyway.
