DH and I are going to stay in an eco-log-cabin-thingy Sat-Mon this weekend [excited] and we will literally only have a big BBQ to cook on.

I need ideas.

I don't eat meat, DH does, we both love fish.

I can't bear fish bones, so sardines, delicious though they are, are OUT.

Please give me some inspiration so we don't end up with burgers/veggie burgers!

Put salmon steaks or fillets in foil with a bit of lemon and some white wine if you fancy and maybe a few herbs and cook on the barbeque.

Vegetable kebabs?

Tuna steaks cooked straight on the barbeque. Marinated maybe?

Can cook mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, corn on the cob, aubergines etc straight on the barbeque.

Serve with lots of salad and crusty bread.

Mussles can be thrown on a bbq. Delicious. Ditto prawns.
Vegetable brochettes
Corn on the cob and baked potatoes in embers.
Fish fillets in foil

Wotzsaname · 30/04/2007 22:10

Pudding: Bannanas cooked in skins - slice and add dash or brandy (or something else you like).

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:13

mmmm mussels, yummy. Do you mean the little closed ones, or the big greenlipped ones in half a shell? Either sounds gorgeous. Salmon in lemon in foil etc - slurp

I'm hungry already!

Wotz - I tried the banana thing once, the bloody things just stuck to the foil! Oh...just re-read...cook in skins - so thats where I went wrong!

Thanks all

Both would do Mama.
My Korean bil introduced me to the idea and twas amazing.

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:23

OH I'm def going to do the mussels, I heart mussels.

I'm wavering on salmon as DH is a bit of a ponce with it and says the smell makes him feel sick (the silly arse)

He could have a steak though

Any ideas on breakfast? Would bagels toast nicely on it or should I just take cereal

OP posts:
moondog · 30/04/2007 22:24

Bagels would be smashing.Slather with Philly and smoked salmon.

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:24

good idea about leftover fish & sourcream PERFECTMOTHER - would be delish with Very Good Bread.

cereal...or fruit with yogurt (add pine nuts) for breakfast

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:25

mmm yes thats what I was thinking moondog.

I don't really do BBQs and I shouljd as I love htem.

we only have a yard, not a garden and it seems a bit silly to cook 5 yards from teh cooker

Wotzsaname · 30/04/2007 22:28

I do like bagels, philly and raspberry jam....

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:30

I'm not a big jam fan tbh (completely irrelevent!!)

How do you cook the corn then - just bung it on the grill bit? In foil?

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 30/04/2007 22:32

takes only a few minutes bunged straight on the bbq.

Or you can wrap in in foil with a bit of butter/oil and a few herbs.

moondog · 30/04/2007 22:33

Just rem, ember that you don't put stuff on the bbq until coals are white.Do not ape the average Brit and put stuff on when flames are leaping. Very bad news indeed.

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:33

Thanks

monkfish a bit pricey for me LL - we are doing this on a bit of a budget TBH

Tuna steaks are a good idea, as is the marinaded halloumi, although last time I had that, it tasted of polystyrene!

OP posts:
moondog · 30/04/2007 22:37

Mackerel s cheap and bloody delicious.

MamaG · 30/04/2007 22:38

is it bony though? I'm such an idiot with bones, if I get even one small one I can't eat the rest of the fish.

I can cope with big bones (salmon etc) as they're so obvious

OP posts:
moondog · 30/04/2007 22:38

Not realy.

Get a grip Mama.

Squid and cherry tomato kebabs-take about two minutes and if you marinade the squid beforehand then you can have anyflavour you like.

Baked apples for breakfast, done in foil-either with jam, mincemeat of just sultanas or some fruit comote and yoghurt.

thedogsbollox · 30/04/2007 22:45

Just take a huge roll of foil - you can cook loads of things in foil parcels. My fav is rosemary and lemon potatoes. Take loads of new baby pots and slice in half length ways. Cut a large sheet of foil, put some olive oil on it, then lay pots on top, sprinkle with rosemary. Fold edges over tightly to make a foil parcel, leaving a tiny gap on one side - squeeze some lemon juice in and scatter with rock salt, then seal up and place on bbq for 30mins or so.

You can cook roast veg in the same way - big parcel of it[yum]

You can even make veg curry this way, mix all the veggies in a big bowl and scatter on 2 heaped teaspoons of curry powder, make parcel up as above, then before sealing shove in a big handfull of chopped coriander, juice of one lime, and half a tin of coconut milk. Seal and cook. Serve with rice cooked on a saucepan on top of bbq

Have fun - it sounds awesome
