Do people like figs?

Growingboys · 29/10/2017 10:18

I'm having friends for dinner and thinking of doing baked spiced figs. But then I wondered if figs were one of those divisive things that some people might hate.

Do you like them? I thought they'd be a good pudding as they're light and (sort of) healthy and the recipe is amazing, but want to canvas opinion before I commit myself!

TIA

Love em.

Put the dried ones in my Christmas cake.

CheckpointCharlie2 · 29/10/2017 18:24

What about the wasps!?
I love figs, fresh and dried, eat them all like an apple!

Haggisfish · 29/10/2017 18:26

I think I'd like them! Do you eat the skin if they have been baked or scoop the insides out?!

Ttbb · 29/10/2017 18:26

I love figs! I prefer them fresh but tat recipe looks really good. Maybe serve with a bit of marscepone?

Trills · 29/10/2017 18:29

I will happily eat the Viennetta

Rainatnight · 29/10/2017 18:32

I really love them. Have to be good, as a PP said. If you happen to live near any Turkish grocers, theirs are miles better than the supermarket ones.

CupcakeEater · 29/10/2017 18:36

love them, sounds great

AdaColeman · 29/10/2017 18:39

Oh yes, I love figs, as a pudding or with meat or cheese. Try them with baked camembert or pork chops if you haven't already.

thinkfast · 29/10/2017 18:45

That recipe looks delicious other than the shortbread which looks too thick for a pudding. I’d get or bake a thinner one...

PurpleDaisies · 29/10/2017 18:46

That looks lovely.

PurplePillowCase · 29/10/2017 18:50

I love baked figs.
can't stand goats cheese though, so most baked fig dished are therefore out for me.

I make it just with butter & curry spices & salt

Fascinating replies all, thank you so much. Couple of seriously good recipe suggestions too - I love the blue cheese one, but did ask our friends who are coming what they don't eat and one said blue cheese. Might do it myself tho!

I got some figs on Ocado this week and did a trial run of the recipe today and it was out of this world. And I'm not even a fig freak! I ate the skins but did google 'do you eat fig skins' because I wasn't sure.

Good tip re: Turkish shop too - there are a couple near my office so I might have a look tomorrow if I get time for a lunch break.

Thank you so much all. Loved the story of the other half who groans with pleasure!

The wasps spoilt figs for me too Sad

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/10/2017 21:10

atleast would you share your flatbread recipe? Sounds delicious.

Etymology23 · 30/10/2017 14:22

The wasps have been digested by the fig plat by the time you eat it though? So it's just fig now, the same as once you've eaten some chicken we digest it and turn it into person!

AbbieLexie · 30/10/2017 14:26

Love figs and often bake them with honey and nuts for dessert. Always go down well - even from those who have never had fig before

IAmTheDragon · 30/10/2017 14:29

I have no strong feelings about figs themselves, but I'd wholeheartedly enjoy what you're doing with them!

Hastalamorte · 30/10/2017 14:30

Sounds good, but as a veggie and biologist I would passGrin
No, the plant does not digest the fig wasps, the female just breaks up in the fruit.

AnnabelFan · 30/10/2017 14:37

I love figs but have had some before which have been disappointedly tasteless.

SemperTemper · 30/10/2017 14:37

Figs are delicious but don't get supermarket ones. Natoora have amazing ones and I think they supply to Ocado now, or you may find them in WholeFoods. It's worth paying the bit extra because dry figs aren't very nice. As someone mentioned upthread, they are out of season though.

Etymology23 · 30/10/2017 14:41

I meant in the enzymatic sense - I thought it was ficin that broke the proteins down? Have not looked into this heavily though! Obviously I'd imagine it could be incomplete, if that's what you're referring to?

2017SoFarSoGood · 30/10/2017 15:13

DH often does figs in our salad. Literally cuts them in half and dry roasts them in a pan. So delectable.

NachoFries · 01/11/2017 15:19

Ooh I love figs Smile

BitOutOfPractice · 01/11/2017 15:24

I love figs. I'll bring my own chair if you just PM me your address...

blueobsessive · 01/11/2017 15:26

I’ll happily eat both figs and viennetta :) (which autocorrect converted to dogs and hornets!)
