We just had cottage pie for the first time this autumn and it was delicious.
What are your favourite winter meals... And puddings...

Cottage/Cumberland/shepherds pie
Beef and ale stew
Left over roast dinner pie
Pumpkin soup with lots of pepper
Bangers n mash

I’m sorry...you’ve never had cottage pie before? Are you from a different country? I’m astounded!

To answer your question, sausages/mashed potato/peas/gravy is the official meal of autumn/winter in our house.

Ignore me...just re-read the OP, “first time this autumn.”

roasted chestnuts .... about half a kilo.... I’m the only one in the family who considers this a ‘meal’

indiana I did realise after posting that it sounded like I'd never had it before, oops.
Had bangers and mash the night before, which is another winter favourite.
I don't have any pudding ingredients in or I'd be tempted by an apple crumble.

We've had venison stew , veg soup and shepherds pie . I love stews in general, with mash and peas

Beef in red wine, with carrots, curly kale and buttery mash.
Dahl, curry
Soup - mushroom or butternut or carrot
Fish pie

Slow-roasted lemon, garlic and thyme chicken (bonus - makes the entire house smell amazing ) with crispy roasties, proper gravy, green beans and mashed swede.

Apple and blackberry crumble, real custard, vanilla ice cream.

God, I wish we were eating that tonight!

Oooh. Have you a recipe for the slow roasted chicken??
I love Boeuf Bourguignonne (no idea of spelling) with mash. Mmmm

^ My late Grandma's sticky, rich, ginger cake, warm from the oven, was a thing of beauty on a miserable day. Mmm.

I have a shepherd's pie, made with leftover roast lamb, and a chilli in the oven at the moment.
Wish I had some fruit to make a crumble.
