It's AWFUL!!!!

I love that sort of thing - pickled onions, cornichons, wallies, pickled peppers yummmmm. But the sauer kraut is GRIM.

What can I do with it?

Salt beef sandwiches with gherkin, sauerkraut, cheese and mayo.
Cheese has to be a holey one, I like Jarlsberg.
It goes well with pork but it might just be that you don't like it!
Jars of sauerkraut can be hit and miss...

Mix with shredded carrot and olive oil and use as a side salad.

Sauerkraut is delicious, by the way.

Excellent with hotdogs and salty pork.

BertieBotts · 25/07/2017 07:07

It's more fermenty than the other things you mention, so it needs to be balanced out.

Sparkletastic · 25/07/2017 07:08

Bin it

Temporary2002 · 25/07/2017 07:09

Put it in the crock pot with a splash of water or wine (the veggies seem to be dry and hard without adding a bit of liquid) over top some cut up potatoes and carrots, and some type of kolbassa, pork ribs or bratwurst. Cook for a few hours until meat and veggies are cooked. Ribs and kolbassa cooked together make a tasty flavour. allrecipes.com/recipe/228630/slow-cooker-pork-and-sauerkraut/
Sauerkraut is not pickled like the foods you listed by the way, it is fermented and one of the best sources of vitamin K and very good for you.
It tastes differant than just eating it as it is, when cooked with pork. It is just kind of tangy. Soooo good.

VanillaSugar · 25/07/2017 07:09

What does it actually taste like? Isn't it supposed to be one of the new super foods? Is it vinegary or sour?

YellowLawn · 25/07/2017 07:15

fry an onion until caramelised.
add the sauerkraut until warmed through.
add half a small tin of pineapple chunks.
have with bratwurst (chipolata will do) and mash.

DoubleHelix79 · 25/07/2017 07:46

This might sound really disgusting, but I swear it's delicious: creamed sauerkraut. If you Google it you'll find different recipes.

I'm German, but had never heard of it until a few years ago when I had it on top of the Zugspitze at 3000 meters above sea level. Combining it with a gorgeous view helps as well Smile

ChainingDaisy · 25/07/2017 07:55

I love it! I eat it with pork belly or sausages, cuts through the fattyness. I just have it warmed through, sometimes cold, eaten straight from the jar. I did a rather unusual online shop once, after rather too much gin; a months worth of meat and 2 enormous jars of sauerkraut arrived, bugger all else. The jars were 1kg each, I ate one on my own in a week.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/07/2017 07:57

It's not a summer thing, you have It in the winter, it's wrong to eat it now.

affectionincoldclimate · 25/07/2017 08:28

Oh dear. I posted a single letter and my phone crashed!

You can make a lovely Polish sauerkraut stew called bigos. It's an awesome hearty dish you can eat with some spuds or nice slice of buttered bread.

Cabbage soup! I remember having this every Christmas Eve, with boiled potatoes.

I love sauerkraut on anything, though. Used to have it slow cooked with sausages (now veggie tho)

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 25/07/2017 08:58

Lots of lovely suggestions but I'm afraid I'm veggie. No improving the sauer kraut with piggies will be possible.

I'll try sauteeing it with... something. And I'll try it with some holy cheese.

Interesting that its not pickled. Perhaps i disliked it so much because i was expecting sour tang and got ferment. Will try again expecting ferment.

I too have a large jar as I was making kebabs and thought that was the nice salady stuff that comes with the takeaway ones.

It isn't. I was very disappointed and now have a huge jar of the stuff.

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 25/07/2017 08:59

Got a good veggie saier kraut soup recipe Pumpkin?

Chardonnay I'm in the southern hemisphere. It's cold, dark and wintery here. Sauer kraut weather!

Get thee to Lidl and get some of those various German sausages.

Get a roasting tin - spread the sour kraut out in it to form a thickish layer, pour over vegi stock, add sausages and bake for 20-30 mins.

OK just read you are vegi = will leave that for anyone who has bout the stuff who isn't.

Just warm it up with some stock and serve as a side dish, something with a bit of fat will be best.

Hulder · 25/07/2017 09:06

Make the Hairy Bikers bigos.

I was more than a bit concerned I was making cabbage on cabbage stew - but it tasted amazing and gets better the longer you leave it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/07/2017 09:08

That's ok then.

Get some sausages and pork ribs, you also need some white wine and bay leaves in the casserole. Leave for as little bad as possible.

A friend of mine adds rice to it, its quite nice.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/07/2017 09:10

Oh sorry, just saw the veggie part.

In this case definitely add rice and lots of seasoning and olive oil.

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 25/07/2017 10:02

Would it be nice with egg?

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/07/2017 10:08

Don't know about about egg, never tried it with egg.

Tofu? Maybe even smoked tofu,

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/07/2017 10:11

Also paprika and thyme.
And leave to braise for longer than you think is needed.

Trust me on this.
