Ok so I used to manage a gourmet cheese shop so I am fairly passionate about cheese. I also had to have my gallbladder out so I can only eat it occasionally.
One of my favourite cheeses in the world is Cashel Blue, an Irish blue cheese that is amazing when it is properly matured, ie at least a couple of weeks past it's expiry date. My Irish neighbour gave me some a couple of weeks ago and I had stashed it in the fridge along with a camembert I was maturing for Christmas day. They were both going to be perfect.
I went back to Ireland for a week and just came back yesterday. Thought to myself in the deli in the airport 'oh I don't have to buy any cheese, I have it all ready at home'.

Dss has thrown it all out as it 'smelled really bad' . He doesn't like cheese.

I can only sympathise, I nbecame dairy (casein) intol when I was expecting DS1, haven't had cheese in YEARS and used to love it too, so know how you feel. Any good deli's near you where you replace?

my dh is constantly chucking out my 'weird off-smelling-funny food' that I hide at the back of the fridge, it is only as exotic as sun ripened tomatoes or a stinky cheese, he simply doesn't understand my need for it.

funny though because he wouldn't pick up anything else to throw away if it needed it, and he manages to ignore his huge pile of paperwork on the kitchen work surface for weeks on end!!!

rant over (thank you!)

pantomimEdam · 20/12/2006 10:13

So, what huge punishment are you inflicting? I reckon that's got to be worth doing the dishes every day for the next decade at last.

Carmenere · 20/12/2006 10:13

Thing is I can't be too angry at him(am seething inside though) because he cleaned the house and even got a Christmas tree when we were away. He was proudly showing me how he had cleaned the fridge when I noticed

I live in the food wasteland that is the Sutton /Croydon area and am at the mercy of the supermarket deli counters. I missed the farmers market

i have to say, i chuck out DP's smelly cheeses he has to get at xmas. I HATE cheese, and just the smell of some of them gives me heartburn (really!), plus last time he got loads of stinky cheeses everything in the fridge tasted of cheese!

LizP · 20/12/2006 10:51

Could Neals Yard Dairy not post you some in time for xmas or Teddington cheese - off course it wont be as ripe (I used to find putting under my seat on the flight back from dublin got it pretty ripe if the heaters were on - so maybe a night in the airing cupboard!)

Erm, can't DH put the cheese in a tupperware box? A big one should still have some air in it to ripen it? Even a cardboard permeable box would neutralise t a bit?

Carmenere · 20/12/2006 11:15

I often put the cheese in a plastic box on an outside windowsill as our house is small and I appreciate that the smell can be a bit ott.

That sounds a simple friendly solution LOL

ComeOyeFaithfulVeneer · 20/12/2006 11:23

What a shame. I too am a huge fan of cheese but have to limit it as I had kidney stones a few years ago and was recommended to cut back on dairy foods from my diet

BrandyTutter · 20/12/2006 11:30

that is shocking behaviour

but you may want to consider keeping the real stinkers in the garage - that's what i do

we have just moved and have a lovely farm shop at the end of the road selling some really lovely cheeses mmmmm

DimpledThighs · 20/12/2006 11:48

oh poor you! I used to live near neals yard and agree that cashel blue is without rival in the sumptious cheese arena.

The only consolation is that it is more widely avalible - I got some in Sefridges last time I was in London as I thought it never made it out of town only to find it stocked in the local deli!!!!! Have a trawl / ring / ask around (or get your naughty dp to do it as pennacne).

Good luck!

I understand fully your disappointment!

LizP · 20/12/2006 13:43

These cheese boxes from lakeland really do work - so well that I loose them in the fridge and when I find them the contents can be positively rank!

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 20/12/2006 14:00

oh noooooooooooooooooo

If I had time I would go and buy some and drive it down to you NOW

Do you want me to ask my fantastic cheese shop if they have any? Could you make it to Barnes if they did?

BrandyTutter · 20/12/2006 15:57

that is indeed a lovely cheese shop CD

but the farm shop here is great

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 20/12/2006 16:06

i mean the white hart lane one not the barnes high st one btw!

Yum @ farm shop!

danceswithreindeer · 20/12/2006 16:08

Carmenere - why does having had your gall bladder out mean you can only eat it occassionally? I have had mine out too, haven't had any problems with any food yet...

BrandyTutter · 20/12/2006 16:10

oh didn't know there was one on whl

i only went to the other one, that had a sister shop in kew til a couple of years ago

is it near annies? (not that it matters now...)

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 20/12/2006 16:11

yes
Gusto and Relish just up the road same side red blind/front

really really great cheese

ask sophable

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 20/12/2006 16:11

I couldn't live with someone who chucked out my cheese

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 20/12/2006 16:14

it's a bit like chucking out the chintz but much more annoying really

wickedwinterwitch · 20/12/2006 17:17

Oh no, poor you.
