What are you favourite things to eat when you have a cold and feel like utter crap?

I feel awful. I have a cold but it's also in my chest a bit so my chest feels all wrong somehow, even though the cough itself isn't too bad. Don't think I'm running a proper temperature but I keep getting hot flushes.

Somehow I am both starving and off food at the same time.

What do you eat when ill? What would be good?

Do you stick with healthy sensible eating or would you go wild and eat crisps/ ring for a pizza/ whatever takes your fancy Grin ?

Tomato soup spiked with some chilli. Will do the power of good!!!

Moln · 15/10/2015 19:14

Over the last few days I've eaten about 18,000* bakery bread rolls and butter. There's a subtle clue. Grin

Depends what's wrong.

Pasta or shepherds/cottage pie when I have a cold etc.

Before an IBD flare up... Curry or chilli. Whenever I start craving spicy food, I know it's only a matter of time.

CoffeeAndOranges · 15/10/2015 20:32

If I'm all stuffed up, I go off tea, coffee & milky drinks. Has to be lemsip (can't now as preggers) or hot squash, or hot lemon, honey & ginger (with whisky in the evenings).

Miso soup can also be a miraculous de-snotter.

Yes to white toast and marmite and Heinz chicken soup. Supernoodles would also work here.

Got to be whatever comfort food you had yourself as a child, or what you can face making (cos the chances of having it brought to your sick bed are always slim...)

MinesAPintOfTea · 15/10/2015 22:47

Hot weetabix with chocolate powder. Now contains 2 ibs triggers, so no longer a good choice Sad

TheRattleBag · 15/10/2015 22:55

Cold tinned custard, preferably with shortbread fingers dipped in it. Or Heinz (has to be Heinz) tomato soup.

pinotblush · 15/10/2015 22:58

I like a spot of heinz tomato soup with grated cheese/lashings of ground pepper in and crusty bread with lashings of butter on.

ZenNudist · 15/10/2015 23:02

Heinz chicken soup. My go to ill food since childhood
Also: milk roll which I eat buttered and I like to fold and flatten even more or just toasted is good too. Other white bread is good too but milk roll is the best for illness.
Original flavoured lucozade if I've had D&V
Boiled egg or scrambled at a pinch

Recovery food includes cheesy baked potato. I like to keep things bland. Maybe push the boat out with Heinz tomato soup.

Nursing bad cold now so this is me tomorrow.

BrandNewAndImproved · 15/10/2015 23:02

Heinze tomato soup with cheese toasties.

BrandNewAndImproved · 15/10/2015 23:03

Oh and hot milk with honey and dissarano or brandy. It gets rid of my colds or at least the alcohol makes me feel better.

iamEarthymama · 15/10/2015 23:05

You have been brought up WRONG!
You have a choice of 2 meals only when you are poorly.

First choice Flu Stew ( said in Valleys Welsh accent)
Onions, lots and lots of garlic, leeks, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, swede
Chopped up kale, cabbage or spinach
Veggie Oxo cubes or bouillon
Hot water. S&P
Bring to boil til all veggies cooked.
You can add dumplings or red lentils but clear best if you are snotty

Second very modern choice is DW's version of Wagamama's Seian Saba soup....they don't have it on the menu anymore Aargh!
Onions garlic asparagus mange tout mushrooms tofu noodles bouillon
You can add white miso S&P
Stir fry veg add stock, noodles then pre fried tofu
Serve with soy sauce or chilli sauce

I always know if I am going down with a cold if I MUST have these.

iamEarthymama · 15/10/2015 23:06

For pudding you have hot water, fresh lemon, honey and lashings of brandy or whiskey!

CantSee4Looking · 15/10/2015 23:50

Cheesy mash
hot fresh bread (but tbh i would eat this all the time it is a weakness)

when i was little i used to get mashed bananas, or whisked egg with sugar (yep raw egg) it was lovely and i miss those days but not sure if brave enough to risk it.

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 15/10/2015 23:55

I always seem to eat rice pudding or custard when I have a cold.

I also like boiled egg and soldiers which I only ever eat when I'm ill. I think because it's comforting and takes me back to my childhood.

LilaTheTiger · 16/10/2015 00:02

Marmite on toast and hot ribena.

When anyone else is ill I make a healthy and nutritious vegetable soup. Unfortunately referred to by the DC as 'sick soup' Envy

dalmatianmad · 16/10/2015 00:09

When I was little:
Heinz tomato soap with 2 slices of white bread that was cut into quarters (square not triangles) or

Egg in egg cup with toast soldiers Wink

When Dd gets poorly with an ear infection I give her to tomato soup and she looks at me as if I'm crazy Blush

Okay, I dozed off this afternoon as my head ached every time I moved my eyeballs and forgot about my thread! But thought I'd come back and update as I'm sure you all won't be able to sleep until you know what I ate for dinner Grin

Got a Marks and Spencer reduced Indian for two and ate pretty much the entire thing except the rice. AND two cream slices. It was lush. I am stuffed and feel LOTS better as in much stronger even though I still have crappy cough and cold symptoms.
