What are you favourite things to eat when you have a cold and feel like utter crap?

I feel awful. I have a cold but it's also in my chest a bit so my chest feels all wrong somehow, even though the cough itself isn't too bad. Don't think I'm running a proper temperature but I keep getting hot flushes.

Somehow I am both starving and off food at the same time.

What do you eat when ill? What would be good?

Do you stick with healthy sensible eating or would you go wild and eat crisps/ ring for a pizza/ whatever takes your fancy Grin ?

Me and my 11 week old baby have stinking colds and we are miserable!! I just ate sausage, chips, baked beans and two paracetamol washed down with some very sugary tea! Heinz tomato soup is in the cupboard for later. Poor baby is struggling to suck because his nose is all blocked up so he is mostly having milk and saline drops! Sad

Another vote for cheese on toast. I like mine with Worcestershire sauce.

LittleRed28 · 15/10/2015 12:29

When I'm ill I crave steamed veg (broccoli, carrots, peas etc) with loads of salt on, washed down with ginger ale.

My mum used to make me "mashy egg" when I was a kid - hard boiled egg, mashed up in a bowl with butter and salt. Proper poorly food!

SargeantAngua · 15/10/2015 12:29

I microwaved my muesli and milk this morning. That and a cup of tea were at least nice if they didn't make me feel much better.

slightlyconfused85 · 15/10/2015 12:39

My mum always did me Heinz tomato soup with cheese on top. Best thing about being ill

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 15/10/2015 12:51

Soup. Spicy soup even better (someone upthread mentioned Thai soup, I think - perfect!)

Or curry.

Hot lemon and honey to drink - dissolve plenty of honey in hot water and add a good squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

AncestralRhubarb · 15/10/2015 12:51

Big steaming mug of Bovril.

susurration · 15/10/2015 12:52

Big mug of tea with toast with butter and marmite is what I eat when I feel poorly. Always makes me feel better.

Soup, of any kind, that's nice and hot and easy to swallow, herbal or fruit tea, and any sweets with menthol in them, Jakeman's do seven different flavours now. I'm looking longingly at some pringles right now, but think they might hurt too much.

squishee · 15/10/2015 13:02

Soup. Even just stock cube broth with bits added.
YY to spicy soups, they really help colds.

And for sore throats, Maltesers.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 15/10/2015 14:34

Soup, either tomato or chicken noodle (stock cube) with a load of veg.

Cheese on toast.

Jacket potato.

Onion and cheese mashed potatoes.

Scrambled eggs on toast.

Lots of hot drinks.

A proper homemade burger with cheese.

Sausage baguette.

Porridge.

adaisychain · 15/10/2015 14:34

Cottage pie! Random but it reminds me of being off school ill as a kid and having my Mum all to myself.

20thcenturyschizoidwoman · 15/10/2015 14:40

Chopped egg in a cup with a knob of butter served with soldiers.

I also have a clear memory of sitting in a bath with my little brother covered in chicken pox eating tomato soup (Heinz of course)

TuckingFablet · 15/10/2015 14:45

I really like juicy fruit like oranges, fresh cold salad and massive amounts of honey and lemon tea.
I find stodgy crap food makes me feel worse.
However, sometimes only a massive pizza, burger or chips and beans will suffice Grin

overthemill · 15/10/2015 15:25

Fish fingers and peas

R0nJ0n · 15/10/2015 15:37

Chicken and sweet corn soup from the Chinese takeaway. Warm, filling, and soothing on a sore throat.

gemdrop84 · 15/10/2015 15:41

Porridge.
Weetabix with hot milk.
Mashed potatoes, sweetcorn, peas and gravy.
Tomato soup with a cheese toastie.
Vast amount of tea.

FannyFanakapan · 15/10/2015 15:49

chicken sweetcorn and noodle soup with a ton of ginger and garlic and a little grinding of szechuan pepper. It makes me feel so much better!

I use a flavourpot - lemongrass and ginger- dried noodles, plus a bit of chicken, half a small tin of sweetcorn, chopped spring onions, ginger and garlic plus a dash of soy sauce. grated carrot too if I can be arsed. Boil it all p together until the noodles are really soft. Add a half tsp sugar at the end too.

deathb4decaf · 15/10/2015 16:24

Marmite pasta with added grated mature cheddar
www.nigella.com/recipes/view/SPAGHETTI-WITH-MARMITE-5306

Alternatively, crumpets or picklets with loads of butter mmmm Grin

Berylpeep · 15/10/2015 16:29

This is handy actually, I have a bit of a cold and feel a bit bleurgh.

Lots of hot tea, apple cinnamon maybe.

Chicken dupiaza, loads of onions, yum. Just hot enough to make your nose run.

Following the crowd a bit but chicken soup actually works and just feels so nourishing!

clippityclop · 15/10/2015 17:17

Lemsip with a glug of whisky. Tinned lentil soup with a spoon of curry paste. Honey on toast.

CrayonShavings · 15/10/2015 17:25

My favourite comfort foods:

Tarka daal
Refried beans on a potato waffle
Fried egg in a white pitta
Marmite crumpets with melted cheese

MagratGarlikAgain · 15/10/2015 18:56

I've been ill all day.

Food of choice was fish finger, salt and vinegar crisp, tomato ketchup and brown sauce sandwich (yes, all on the same sandwich). Lovely. I probably would have added a fried egg with a soft yolk to the sandwich too, but we didn't have any eggs in.

violetwellies · 15/10/2015 19:02

Smoked salmon, on its own, straight from the pack.
Whiskey and hot lemon.

MimiLaBonq1 · 15/10/2015 19:05

Curry.
Cheese on toast.
Chicken soup.
Hot honey and lemon to drink.
