Greek food for casual dinner party - how does this menu sound?

So I thought I could do a selection of dishes for everyone to help themselves to:-

Spinach and feta filo pie
Lemon roasted potatoes
Falafel
Flatbreads
Couple of dips (houmous etc)

I need some sort of salad or veg dish to go with it - I bloody hate greek salad because of the celery so need another option.

For pudding I am doing baklava icecream in filo cups drizzled with honey.

Does it sound ok? Or should I add more to the main?

I have never had celery in Greek salad-either here or in Greece.

Surely just toms, cucumber, olives, lettuce, feta maybe pepper then oil and vinegar. I love a Greek salad.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2014 22:10

Deffo no celery in Greek salad. Soak red onion in red wine for half an hour before using in the salad - lovely.

Tsatziki

I'd lose the cups and jusy do baklava, maybe with some Greek yoghurt or cream, perhaps with a drop of orange blossom water in it.

AngryFeet · 01/01/2014 22:23

The icecream is baklava flavour not icecream with baklava :)

I know. But I still think normal baklava would be nicer. Then again, I don't like icecream much. :)

Onykahonie · 01/01/2014 22:32

Definitely no celery in Greek salad...ever! You could do a plain tomato and cucumber salad instead though. I love hummus, tzatziki and aubergine salad
Apart from that, the menu sounds amazing.

Invite me please.
I can bring some naice olives.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2014 22:35

You can do a nice feta dip - mash feta and add a bit of yoghurt to loosen. Add finely chopped red onion, finely chopped green chilli, squeeze of lemon and drizzle of olive oil plus lots of black pepper.

Monty27 · 01/01/2014 22:36

Just do your own salads, let people have what they want, I've never noticed celery in Greek salad either, just put some celery with the dips if it is traditional?

AngryFeet · 01/01/2014 22:36

2 veggies out of 6 of us so figured it was easier to keep it all veggie.

Sesame courgettes sound lovely!

I don't know where I got the celery thing from. Must be the cucumbers (which I also hate).

I've never had celery in a Greek salad, just leave it out if you don't like it.
I agree that you need at least another main dish, how about aubergine/tomato bake with a cheese topping, or a fish/fennel stew, or a platter of grilled lamb chops with plenty of rosemary.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2014 22:37

Greek butter beans are lovely - and veggie.

Allalonenow · 01/01/2014 22:41

Oh just seen the vegetarian thing, in that case aubergine stuffed with rice would be nice, Greeks love stuffed veg.

Dilidali · 01/01/2014 22:48

Dolmades (stuffed rice in vine leaves), tesco does tins, just pop in microwave few secs, or oven if you have time.

Do proper coffee and serve with a glass of water :)

What is baklava flavour???!!! You mean rose water? And pistachios?

Youghurt, salt, grated cucumber bit of mint, garlic is another concoction you can use with pita bread.

I love your menu and it made me very very hungry!!!!

What's the occasion? :)

AngryFeet · 01/01/2014 22:50

This is the icecream www.kalofagas.ca/2011/07/13/baklava-ice-cream/

No occasion. My girlfriends and I take it in turns to host dinner at ours once a month :)

And I really like the idea of hosting girlfriend dinners :)

I am so hungry right now!!!

DrownedGirl · 01/01/2014 23:02

Bulgur wheat salad?

MadameDefarge · 01/01/2014 23:11

taramasalata surely?

bruffin · 01/01/2014 23:19

What about fasolia or Bamies (okra) in tomato.

Salad just cucumber, tomato and coriander with olive oil and lemon juice

bruffin · 01/01/2014 23:22

Also if you have a greek or turkish shop nearby get hold of some freshly baked bread gorgeous for mopping up tomato sauces or dips.

bruffin · 01/01/2014 23:22

daktylia bread

FrankAndFurt · 01/01/2014 23:28

I would love this. It's fine just as it is.

How about adding Mushrooms a la Grecque

or some roasted peppers

FrankAndFurt · 01/01/2014 23:30

I'd come just for the icecream......

Looks really yummy. Grin

The icecream with figs looks amazing.

CheckpointCharlie · 02/01/2014 15:16

That sounds amazing, I would eat it all! But it does need a Greek salad with no celery.
