Greek food for casual dinner party - how does this menu sound?

So I thought I could do a selection of dishes for everyone to help themselves to:-

Spinach and feta filo pie
Lemon roasted potatoes
Falafel
Flatbreads
Couple of dips (houmous etc)

I need some sort of salad or veg dish to go with it - I bloody hate greek salad because of the celery so need another option.

For pudding I am doing baklava icecream in filo cups drizzled with honey.

Does it sound ok? Or should I add more to the main?

Wow, some lovely sounding recipes on this thread, I will be trying them.

Never heard of celery in Greek salad.

Skinned cucumber, sweet tomato, red onion, olive oil, lemon dressing.

I would do a meat choice to be honest as only 2 are veggie, be nice to cater for the 4 meat eaters. Something simple like moussaka or kelftico (lamb in rich tomato sauce with herbs) usually served with rice. These can be done in advance.

Dessert sounds lovely, I'd serve baklava with ice cream.

Im half greek
I put celery in salad. Surely greek saad is just one of those restaurant inventions.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2014 21:29

Everywhere I've been in Greece, it's called either Greek or Village salad and has been: onion, green pepper, tomatoes, cucumber, feta, olives, oregano, and sometimes capers.

I put celery in salad too. Just not in what we here in the UK consider 'Greek salad' which, for us, traditionally, as taught by Greek restaurateurs, comprises of cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta, olives, oregano, olive oil and seasoning.

I'm sure lots of Greek people here and in Greece use celery in salads, but this is a particular, salad, which has never featured celery.

Thesimplethings · 02/01/2014 21:34

Oregano in the Greek salad dressing too.

One of my favorite islands is kefalonia and they do amazing traditional Greek food.

Another idea is garlic olive oil king prawns in shells

bruffin · 02/01/2014 21:38

But i very much doubt you would go to greek house and being served somrthing called greek salad. Its just sometjing you would find in s greek restaurant whether it be in greece cyprus or the uk.

You could do deep fried white bait or kalamari, and with skordalia, that potato / garlic-type dip / salad. That's yummy. Or another favourite of mine are fried beetroot tops - delicious - can't remember what that's called now. Your dinner party sounds great!

I think op wants veggie
There is also kepepkia (dolmades stuffed vine leave)
Veggie ones are rice parsley and tomato puree) or for meat ones just add minced meat.
Or couftedes which are a fried meatball msfe with grated potato and mince meat parsley and cariander.

NettoSuperstar · 02/01/2014 22:59

I leave celery out of anything that is going in my mouth.
Revolting stuff!

jessisinthegarden · 13/01/2014 13:48

I am Greek and can assure you categorically that Greek salad has NO celery!!!! Eugh.
Falafels are not Greek either, really, more middle-Eastern,
Taramosalata could be good, giant beans in sauce (gigandes), aubergine dip (melinzanosalata) is easy to whizz up too, dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) either veggie or with meat.
You need my mum there to make it all for you in a jiffy Grin
Enjoy!

jessisinthegarden · 13/01/2014 13:50

Veggie stuff?
Take some really good, ripe medium sized vine tomatoes and cut in half, then scrape out seeds and flesh to leave a void.
Mix up some cream cheese, sour cream, minced raw garlic (go easy on it!) and spoon into the tomato halves. Decorate with an olive. Et voila'.

nilbyname · 13/01/2014 13:51

Roasted up courgettes, red onion, yellow and red pepper with oregano, garlic olive oil and some balsamic vinegar.

Griddled halloumi.

NigellasDealer · 13/01/2014 13:56

celery in Greek salad? just no way!!
i cannot think of anything else that has not already been suggested, but houmous is not all that Greek IME - more middle eastern like falafel - what about tzatziki and tarama? and some really good bread ?

JamNan · 13/01/2014 14:06

You could make your own herby feta chunks in olive oil, recipe here

I like white cabbage salad (grate it finely), red onion, carrot in an oil and lemon dressing with garlic and salt.

Don't forget the retsina and ouzo! And maybe a watermelon.
