Cookery Book Club September - Falling Cloudberries by Tessa Kiros and any River Cafe book

Think Tiger must be away so thought I'd better get this up, ready and waiting as August is disappearing fast.

I vow to be more productive in September, I have Falling Cloudberries and a River Cafe book Easy, though not enamoured of it so will check out the library for Red or Blue book. Any recommendations from either book please.

The souvlaki recipe from FC is very good.

Yay thanks pantah. I've got cloudberries and RC green waiting to go. May try to get hold of another RC but I only have until the 21st when we're off to Japan on holiday Grin

I am signing in, though probably won't be joining in this month.
I did get Falling Cloudberries, and Food from Many Greek Kitchens, from the library, but found very little that appealed to me as a vegetarian.

Have River Cafe Green, that I got cheap second hand, but nothing really appeals. Got RC Italian from the library, but again, not grabbed.

so I shall continue my love affair with EGoR, and maybe make some more stuff from S&S.

What I really dislike about the books this month, however, is the style - font, layout etc. This bookclub has shown me that I love the books that look like EGoR, S&S, Ottolenghi etc. But Tessa's italic writing I can hardly read, and the multicoloured massive text of RC drives me mad!

Glorious how exciting going to Japan I am very jealous. It's somewhere we have talked about going but not sure how feasible with two little ones.

Right back to food I think I too will be sitting this month out for a few reasons. Off

Off on hols for last week of September. Don't have thecloudberries book and I am really enjoying Egor and have so many black beans I need to do some more recipes. Also fancy trying a few more from hairy bikers. One month just isn't enough when the books are good!

So I will watch with interest and be back to it next m

huevos I'm with you on the style of fonts ect in the books it def influences me when flicking through and choosing what to cook, and yes the multi coloured text in river cafe is maddening!
Like others have said I've hardly cooked much in August so will keep those on the go too whilst trying septembers books.

My cloudberries hasn't arrived, though yodel claim to have left it at an invisible neighbours house. Whilst the dispute continues I don't think I'll get it before the end of sept let alone the start. I have all the river cafe books, but haven't really gone through all of them yet. But I have the blue one out and will definitely be trying the risotto Milanese, penne with slow cooked sausage sauce and the roast shin of veal (which I plan to do with the balsamic and thyme roast potatoes, for a Sunday lunch) It's rainy and cooling rapidly here so i'm quite happy to go into heartier fare. Disappointed by not having cloudberries though.

How old are your two coco? I'll see what I think and tell you about it if you like (though my DD is only 7 months so what do I know! I seem to remember tiger lived there so she may have some thoughts).

Those sound tasty pause, perhaps I will look out another RC.

Marking place. Not sure how much we'll do this month. Library has shut until end of Oct so will be looking online. Library didn't have cloudberries and none of the River Cafe books were there when I went over the weekend. Don't really want to buy any as I'm a try before you buy kind of person Grin. Expect we'll continue with Egor as still so much we want to cook.
Enjoy your holiday glorious. Would love to visit Japan as it brother lives there and it sounds amazing- maybe when DS is older and I can face the long flight with him!!!

Another one tempted by Japan, but still think the kids are too young (5 and 3) to be entertained by it all. Though they do love Totoro, but would probably expect to see him as soon as they arrived!
Where are you going, glorious?
We went pre-DC and loved it, DH worked there for 3 months too.

I havent done much from August as we have been away in Italy, so I was quite excited about River Cafe as I am Italian crazy at the moment, but cooked clam and brocolli pasta from River Cafe 2 easy last night and it was disappointing, and expensive. I also found the layout off putting - I have all the RC books and maybe this is why I don't use them. They seem a bit dated somehow. I have only done one EGOR so might do a few from that - the book seems more suited to Autumn for me than a hot summer

Signing in, but don't have any of the books Sad Will look in the library when I go this or next week.

August was a bit of a wipeout for me due to my dad being very unwell and then a two week holiday, so I will have a look at those books (and read the thread) with the aim of cooking from them this month. Also loved the Hairy Bikers book so will dip into that, and TM is still doing it for me (and I have lots of chipotles thanks to Huevos Smile) so I will probably look at that too.

However, DH and I are thinking of doing the 5:2 so it may all go to pot...

We're off to Tokyo, Matsumoto and Kyoto with hopefully a few day trips. Not sure how much we'll see but the aim is to consider it a success if we eat some good food and walk round some different streets/parks. DD doesn't sleep anyway so what have we got to lose Grin . Any tips huevos?

This week we're planning on the avgolemono from cloudberries and I might make dolmades as well since fresh vine leaves are in several of our local shops and I love them but haven't had homemade for about 15 years Shock

Hello, signing in! Thanks pantah for setting up the thread! I apologise for being so rubbish. I went back to work a bit earlier than expected to take advantage of a new project starting... It's been very good but I just feel so so busy! I've also started 5:2 ... I have to say it's great so far... But yet another distraction away from cooking.

I did live in Tokyo, it was amazing. I've never eaten so well in my life! Where are you going glorious?

I have kicked off sept with river cafe blue, slow cooked sausage sauce (pg 77) it was delicious. Really delicious. Unctuous and creamy, very rich family food. Takes a while but very much worth it. If these are the standard of all the recipes then a happy cook I'll beSmile a very pleasing pasta to sauce ratio too- I find alot of chefs suggest huge amounts of pasta per head, (in Jamie case he advised 500g for four people in one recipeShock ) this recipe, for me ,got the balance right.
The whole family loved it.
Though where the author thinks domestic kitchens are getting 800ml tins of tomatoes I don't know, I've never seen bigger than your average 400g, not rocket science to double up smaller tins, but really an 800g tin of tomatoes? Where do you get these beasts?

I should also add that IMO it's in need of a salad- rich, creamy and no crunch, it needs a salad.

Mmm you've sold me on that Smile

We've just had the avgolemono. It's nice and sharp and the egg gives it a silky texture. I found there was too much water for the stock - thought there would be but I try to do what it says the first time. I think I prefer it as a sauce rather than a soup though; Nigella's version in How to Eat is yummy although I'm sure not remotely authentic.

Signing in for september. Planning on doing themoussaka from falling cloudberries this week. I have river cafe easy 1 and 2 from the library but haven't had a chance to look through yet. I need family friendly recipes this month as dh is away for a lot of it so will be cooking for just me and the dc.

Signing in for this month, failed to do much in August as too many visitors and holidays meant no experimenting and this month more holidays, although I do have cloudberries and the yellow and green river cafe books - so it would be pitiful not to attempt something.
