It's got eyes and fins and everything! How should I cook it?

Slap someone with it go oooon...

or barbecue it..

I'm so useful.

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:05

I've already slapped dh with it for fun. We've no barbecue and I don't even know what kind of fish it is! Aloses in French, can't find a translation for it. It's pretty big though. Someone must have some good ideas!

Stick it in some foil, throw on some fresh Rosemary, salt, pepper and drizzle some olive oil on.

Thats the only way I know how though Grin

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:10

Ok, how long do you have to cook it for?

pmsl at slapping dh with it - this is the true calling of all fish. except Cod, obv.

and its english name is a Shad - not sure how that'll help though. Second oven cooking in foil - v good for fish too big for griddle pan.

Nbg · 04/05/2006 16:12

Hmmm not sure!

I'm no use am I.

20 mins?

suzywong · 04/05/2006 16:13

put some olive oil on a big piece of foil
with kitchen scissors snip off tail and fins and if you can bring yourself to do so, cut the head off just behind the gills withthe meat cleaver dh bought you
Wipe out the bellly cavity, which i presume is empty from guts, with kitchen paper
make some diagonal slashes in it's sides
rub in salt and lemon juice, seal the foil parcel and put it in a hot oven for 15 minutes and serve with salad an bread

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:14

Shad? Never heard of it! I'll stick it in the oven then - thanks!

suzywong · 04/05/2006 16:14

yes just like what NBG said

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:15

suzywong - I like the head! I think I'll go for your recipe, sounds nice! If I don't have lemon juice can I use orange juice?

fastasleep · 04/05/2006 16:19

It's like a herring anyway.

suzywong · 04/05/2006 16:19

yes of course you can love, my MIL can such the eyes and flesh from a fish head while speaking 3 different languages

but it ain't pretty

Nbg · 04/05/2006 16:23

Ah 15 mins I wasn't that far out Grin

I watched Jamie Oliver once do the same but he cooked it in newspaper and BBQ'd it.

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:28

Right, am gonna save it till tomorrow and do it properly. I'm gonna get a lemon and some herby things, spread mustard over fish, sprinkle herby things and salt on it, drizzle over the lemon (a real lemon an all, not that plastic lemony bottle you get for pancakes!) and wrap it in tinfoil. Bake it for 20 mins then slap it on the table in front of horrified children!

Lovely! Smile Thanks guys!

mustard??????

Nbg · 04/05/2006 16:29
Grin Bet their faces will be a picture!

A fish with fins and eyes on the table and their expected to eat it!

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:30

Err, is that wrong then? Dh suggested mustard!

OP posts:
suzywong · 04/05/2006 16:31

may be a tad overpowering, why not mix up some mustard in some mayonaise and serve it on the side

Blu · 04/05/2006 16:40

I would hold back on the mustard, too.
Otherwise, sounds fab.
It's nice with crunchy crystals of rock salt, I think.

Nbg · 04/05/2006 16:41

Oh yes, rock salt. None of that other stuff.

Wholegrain mustard mixed with mayo and honey is gorgeous and is great to dip new potatoes in or wedges.

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 16:43

Ok, I've leave off the mustard!
I'll take a piccy of their faces when I slap it down on the table!

Grin

We've just been invited to a BBQ.
No cooking for me tonight! Wooohooo

ggglimpopo · 04/05/2006 16:55

Alose - you are meant to barbeque them in the garden cos they stink out the house.....Think they are Shad in English.

They are lovely (apparently; I was not too taken) and are very bony.

My mobile has died with all numbers aboard. Could you ring me please.

Rhubarb · 04/05/2006 20:26

Thanks ggg! I was looking forward to it!!!
Will call you tomorrow as it would be a French cardinal sin to call you at this time!
