What are the secrets of healthy, filling , homemade porridge?

I'm sick of OatsSoSimple - it just tastes like stodgy now and I'm starving and shakey 3 hours later. Any nice porridge recipes please which will keep me satisfied until lunchtime?

Porridge is so simple anyway.

Equal amounts of oats, water and milk in a saucepan over a low heat and keep stirring until it is done. The more you stir the creamier it tastes.

Then add whatever you want when it has cooked. I quite like apple, sultana and cinnamon porridge at the moment.

I like to add a tiny pinch of salt as well as sugar, honey or whatever. My grandma' was a scot and insisted it was The Law, I agree.

If you put the oats, water and milk together the night before it'll cook more quickly and get creamy easier too.

Obviously you can make it in the microwave, its fine but it not quite as nice as properly made.

Okay, shall try that tomorrow but pop it all in saucepan tonight. Do you measure via a small cup or something? So it would 1 cup of oats to 1 water and 1 milk? I used to make fresh porridge for the children when they were little (a la Annabel Karmel - always seemed a faff!) so tomorrow it's for me! Thanks

Just cover oats in a bowl with milk, microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. Can use Scotts Traditional Porage Oats or other jumbo oats for more texture, add raisins, etc.

Adding a couple squares of Lindt chili chocolate can really perk up a cold Monday morning!

I use an espresso cup. 123 method.
1 of oats
2 of liquid - water or milk or combination
3 mins in micro (stir half way)
Easy to remember. I have molasses on mine.

1 small cup of Jordan's jumbo oats plus 2 cups whole milk. Simmer gently in a saucepan for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until it reaches your preferred thickness.

Serve with either: a teaspoon of brown sugar and a tablespoon of wheatgerm; sliced banana and honey; sliced apple, brown sugar and cinnamon; fresh blueberries or raspberries; raisins; dried apricots... possibilities are endless.

Add sliced banana to it - gives it a sweet kick and fills you up for longer (just had that for my dinner, yum yum!)

I only ever use Scots Porridge oats and follow the instructions on the packet. (The ordinary ones not jumbo oats or whatever.) I do use the microwave method now though I didn't used to.

Mmm oats. Tesco finest oats are nicest, but any big chunky ones are yum. No water, all milk. 123 micro method is good. Get frozen big bags of mixed summer berries (also Tesco) and chuck in a few, cheap and tasty, best brekkie in the world.

Scotts jumbo oats. Equal measures oats and milk then a dash of water. Microwave for 2.30 minutes. Then microwave some cold milk for a minute in a mug whilst bowl of porridge is waiting.

Put sugar on the porridge and pour the warm milk over it.

So nice! And only takes a few minutes!

I like to put some oats, a dessert spoon of coconut oil, a sliced banana and a drizzle of honey in Tupperware in the evening. Then the next morning I add a bit of milk and microwave. So simple and delicious!

I LOVE pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and raisins in mine- cooked with them in so they go juicy.

Asda extra special oats are a good option too.

Options: coconut milk; cinnamon and grated apple; mashed banana; loads of seeds and chopped nuts.

Oat bran is nicer I think, not so chunky. But has more soluble fibre which is what fills you up. I make it with water and stir in a bit of milk before eating (and 1/2 tsp sugar) and it fills me up til lunchtime.

I am a totally milk woman too. I pretty much always add a squashed banana and half the time grate in a pear and/or apple too. Occasionally seeds or other berries, or honey, or dried fruit, or yogurt. Yum!

wohoo! someone agrees with me! Grin Protein gives a much slower energy release, and doesnt make your blood sugar spike.
