I'm sick of OatsSoSimple - it just tastes like stodgy now and I'm starving and shakey 3 hours later. Any nice porridge recipes please which will keep me satisfied until lunchtime?

Thanks

A table spoon of apple sauce is lovely too Wink

AmberLeaf · 30/12/2012 23:49

Any cheap range from a supermarket will do.

Soak over night.

One cup [whatever size that may be, but use the same for each measurement] of dry oats, one and a half cups of cold water, soak overnight in the pot.

In the morning add a cup of cold milk, bring to the boil, stir, add sugar to taste.

You will have perfect porridge with plump oats if you follow that method.

CogitOCrapNotMoreSprouts · 31/12/2012 00:33

Another time I'd suggest you try medium ground oatmeal as a change from rolled oats. Takes longer to cook and benefits from being soaked the night before but I think the texture is nicer. I add pumpkin seeds and honey on top of mine as an extra protein element to the oat-germ and milk

littleducks · 31/12/2012 00:47

I'm always starving mid morning after a porridge. So either have it later 9/10 am or have to have elevenses.

NuclearStandoff · 31/12/2012 13:24

I increase protein content by adding mixed seeds and nuts at the end.

And sometimes make a vegan version using ground almonds and water instead of milk.

trice · 31/12/2012 13:45

I like a good knob of salted butter in mine. Cinnamon is good too.

FellatioNelson · 31/12/2012 13:49

There are no secrets. I don't really understand the need for 'instant' porridge. Oridnary porridge is practically instant anyway. Confused It is the easiest thing ever. And delicious.

OLittleTown · 01/01/2013 16:05

Thanks all - its been brown sugar the past two days but will definitely start adding other flavours! Must nicer than Oatsosimple (or the horrible 'porridge' we used to have at school Grin) and it is keeping me going til lunchtime. Result!

Ahem. This is my Mastermind specialist subject.

I may have been known to make some as a treat before bed Grin.

One cup of oats, to 2 cups of water.
4.5 minutes in the microwave at 600W.
Add milk/honey/sugar/whatevs

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Never hungry til lunchtime.

Not porridge but related - Bircher Muesli

In a plastic tub the night before you want it - mix
a smallish cup of oats (any kind)
some nuts eg almond or mixed
some sunflower seeds or other seeds such as pumpkin etc
a little dried fruit e.g. sultanas, cranberries, mango etc
enough milk (I use skimmed) to generously cover.

Leave in fridge overnight.

Next morning - quickly chop some fresh fruit e.g an apple or a pear, mix in with the muesli. Top with a spoon of plain fat free greek yogurt if desired and a drizzle of honey. Eat.

It is truly the food of the Gods; delicious, nutritious and will easily see you through until lunch time.

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved · 01/01/2013 18:16

When you add apple/ pear/ nana's do you put them in before cooking? And if so do they taste cooked, or just warmed?

Must get into proper porridge!

Teapot13 · 01/01/2013 22:40

Does it have to be oats? We like semolina here -- you kind of have to do it on the stove because it has to be stirred constantly but it takes almost no time. I just use milk, raisins and cinnamon, then add the semolina when the milk is scalded (in the proportion the instructions say).

I add honey, DH adds sugar. I used to add applesauce as a sweetener for toddler DD but she's on to us now and we give her honey as well.

With any hot cereal, I put the raisins in to start to give them maximum time to plump up.

ohfunnyhoneyface · 03/01/2013 08:15

I sometimes grate the apple in at the start of cooking, or slice the banana up thinly and add to it whilst cooking OR after, both tastes nice. If it's an older banana I just mash it right in!

Always tastes 'cooked'. Though I bet cooked apple then added would be lovely too...

DoubleLifeIsALifeHalved · 03/01/2013 09:05

Sounds yummy! In horrid shopping accident I have 'golden syrup oastsosimple' currently eating it & sighing...

mothermirth · 03/01/2013 09:10

Condensed milk and a blob of butter, mmmmm Grin

BonzoDooDah · 03/01/2013 16:01

I second cooking it in a microwave - can cook it in a glass bowl - no need to stir or worry about sticking or burning. (I don't soak and am on Slimming world diet so weigh stuff - but use 35g oats, and up to 200g with the milk [165g milk])
I don't even soak the oats - 2 minutes in micro on full, stir, and maybe another minute if they're sturdy oats, less if quite finely ground.

I have it with a teaspoon of nutella, or blackcurrant jam ... or both if feeling greedy hungry.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2013 17:40

Like porridgelover I've researched this subject and would say that everyone is different and we all like different things. (The protein V carbs argument can be solved by looking at your blood type BTW). But oats are one of the most nutritious carbs.

  1. Use the largest organic oats you can find
  1. Soak in water overnight or for 5 mins in luke warm water before cooking gently.
  1. Keep stirring or even whisking till it's the texture you like.
  1. Milk is unnecessary when cooking because the oats make their own "milk'. of course you can add cream, milk, soya milk etc when in the bowl to cool it down.
  1. I like adding ground almonds, pumpkin and linseeds. They can be cooked whole with the porridge as someone upthread said.
  1. Molasses is fab with porridge, as is very dark brown sugar and maple syrup . Xmas Smile
ComradeJing · 03/01/2013 18:40

I also use the 123 method but only use milk.

I throw in a handful of frozen berries attheend (which also makes it cool enough to eat immediately) and a teaspoon of jam. My mum cooks it with marmalade, caraway seeds, cinnamon and sultanas.

Roseformeplease · 03/01/2013 18:43

Half a cup of oats to a full cup of water / milk. 3 mins (roughly) in the microwave. Add sweetener / milk / cream to taste.

fivecandles · 03/01/2013 19:20

Cover bottom of a bowel with oats, a bit of cinammon or mixed spice, then cover with milk. Zap in microwave for 1.5 minutes, stir, then add blueberries and zap for another minute or so.

fivecandles · 03/01/2013 19:21

Then squeezy golden syrup. Yum.

OLittleTown · 03/01/2013 20:51

I'm loving my breakfast this past few days - and it's keeping me going til lunchtime. Have perfected my oats/milk ratio and had banana this morning. Something different tomorrow - maybe cinnamon or frozen raspberries! Thanks for all the suggestions!

This no-cook fridge porridge is delicious. I was initially very skeptical about eating porridge that hadn't been cooked but it is really, really lovely.

vickycats · 03/01/2013 23:09

We put mashed bananas in ours a minute before finishing microwaving! They are so yummy and don't need any sugar/sweetners/sugar at all. YUM!!!!

CredulousThicko · 03/01/2013 23:18

Isn't OatSoSimple a processed version of cereal anyway? they always make me feel shaky

I always use basic oats, I think the trick is to make it fully with milk, not water, and cook as long as possible - I find that this makes it naturally go sweet.
