I'm making Mushroom Butter off the BBC Good Food website, with toasted ciabatta slices. I made it last year and everyone loved it, plus you can make it a couple of days in advance. Here's a link: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/890645/mushroom-butter-on-toast

We're having prawns cocktail. What's wrong with enjoying the 1970s each year?Grin

hillyhilly · 21/12/2012 20:40

Prawn cocktail here too! Except mil who will be given melon

openerofjars · 21/12/2012 20:40

Celeriac, roast butternut squash, roast garlic and parsnip, so it will be a bit seasonal and will use up the rest of the parsnips. I have no idea if it will work or not but I am going to make it on Sunday and freeze it. Does it sound like those ingredients will go?

I would love to do prawn cocktail but we have 2 vegetarians and one baby, so soup is easier.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2012 20:48

spanky doesn't mil deserve the prawns? Xmas Wink

opener sounds fab to me but then I'm a throw it all in and hope for the best kind of cook!

Actually might go for the melon too, seems to fit in with the prawn cocktail. If we don't get over the novo virus soon though it may just be beans on toast for everyone....

Chocolate? [Grin]

I am doing canapés instead of a starter. We have our meal fairly late on Xmas day as our friends don't arrive until about 3pm, so we will have nibbly things before hand then go straight to the main event.

I think the nibbles might be including mushroom butter this year though Xmas Smile

LaCiccolina · 21/12/2012 20:52

Smoke salmon lemon and brown buttered bread. And Italian bagged lettice.

1976 still here too, but well fish is lighter. Dunno about bread tho.....!

PoppyWearer · 21/12/2012 20:52

Tomato, mozzarella and avocado salad looks festive.

Or whatever and sprinkle in pomegranate seeds for instant Christmas effect.

We are having a mix of hot nibbles (shop bought) such as Coquilles Saint Jacques, mini Yorkshire puds with beef. DH normally makes them but we are catering for more people than normal this year.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2012 20:52

HSMM think that's what he dc will be having Xmas Grin

LaCiccolina · 21/12/2012 20:52

Argh lettuce!!! Damn spell check even US can't spell it that way surely!!

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 21/12/2012 20:53

Chicken liver pate.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2012 20:56

Should have mentioned that DH is at work and we are entertaining so anything I do will be easy peasy.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2012 20:58

Chicken liver pâté sounds lovely but my DM, the prawn cocktail refuser, will probably refuse that too. Think someone should write a fussy eater help book for geriatrics Xmas Grin

MummyDoIt · 21/12/2012 20:58

Mine will be a large gin & tonic!

PrincessMononoke · 21/12/2012 20:58

Prawn cocktail here too, might do canapés to nibble on while we are cooking, my parents do Parma ham and melon or soup - broccoli and Stilton or leek and potato

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/12/2012 21:01

Last time I had gin I broke my leg, so might give that one a miss!

littlemissnormal · 21/12/2012 21:01
