We had oysters at my dh's Xmas do. They were in tomato juice, tobasco and vodka, in a shot glass.....hic, hic, hic.....

bealos · 22/12/2012 14:53

My veggie alternative would be onion soup - properly made by letting the onions stew for hours (easy to leave on a low heat).

MariahScarey · 22/12/2012 14:55

ew no
i couldnt eat a starter.

i always think starters on xmas day are a bit naff to be honest
a bit ( coughs) working class

bealos · 22/12/2012 14:57

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/12/2012 14:57

We'll be having spicy lentil soup. I've always managed to sit down and eat a starter and still have the main meal on table in time??

We always have smoked salmon on brown bread with butter, lemon and black pepper. Bit unoriginal, but everyone likes it - including 19-month-old.

BendyBobsBrusselsSprouts · 22/12/2012 15:09

We're having Prawn cocktail too.

I have suggested other things but dh (creature of habit like no other) looked crestfallen. I'm jazzing it up with a bit of smoked salmon and avocado though.

We're doing another big meal boxing day and having pate to start then.

BendyBobsBrusselsSprouts · 22/12/2012 15:11

Ooh love love the sound of those mushrooms looby!

I'm the only one in the house that likes mushrooms though, so I can't do themHmm.

DowntonSprouts · 22/12/2012 15:16

Ham hock and Wensleydale terrine with homemade chunky piccalilli or cheeky chilli chutney, depending on your preference.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/12/2012 15:21

Ah I must be more posh than I realised then. We never had a starter before I met DH and his family always do. Have long suspected they are a little working class Xmas Grin

nice starter is avocado scooped out and mixed with tinned salmon, or shredded smoked salmon and some cottage cheese add a little finely chopped onion and put back in shells sprinkle cheddar over top and grill until cheese browns.... yummy. actually think I will do this for xmas eve supper now.

JamNan · 22/12/2012 16:35

StepAway,
that sounds like a lovely supper snack.

Asinine · 22/12/2012 16:43

We do a mini meal at 11, with selection of pates or smoked salmon on toast, with fizz and a Christmassy sponge cake. Then main meal 4ish.

EggNogRules · 22/12/2012 16:44

Starter and class Confused. I am frightfully common though.

We would have four courses if it was an adult only meal that lasted for hours.

My plan is canapes, main meal, dessert and cheese board for supper. Before we had ds we had the same with a starter. Best meal I ever had was at least 11 courses with wine matching each course. Not something I would do at home though.

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 22/12/2012 16:44

downton can I please have the terrine recipe? That sounds gorgeous.

ilovemykitchenaid · 22/12/2012 17:40

Nigel slaters tea time makerel on toast

Tragedies · 22/12/2012 17:51

Baked camembert here too, with vair vair nice crackers.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 22/12/2012 17:58

We're at MILs so we shall have the usual prawns in Bain Marie sauce served in a half avocado. I'll eat DDs avocado and she'll eat my prawns (because seafood is the devil's work)

JingleJohnsJulie · 22/12/2012 18:03

Does the Bain Marie sauce taste a little metallic? Xmas Grin

PestoFrostissimos · 22/12/2012 18:07

Costco gravalax

Yum Xmas Grin

We don't bother with a starter.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 22/12/2012 18:16

we have canapes if we have dinner guests
but it's just the four of us this year so will eat selection boxes all morning instead
