Just finished decorating a cake and it looks sweaty.

I baked cake yest. Crumb coated last night left in fridge until today.

Covered in icing and decorated in fondant.

It looks all greasy and horrible.

Wtf did I do?

I'll put a pic on my profile in a minute.

No idea what its for Blush

I assume its to help the icing 'stick'to the cake. Used in place of marzipan?

Oh, and ok. I just cover cakes in jam and then fondant straight away. Prob not the proper way of doing it but seems to work

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/08/2012 09:41

Stupid auto correct

blueberryboybait · 08/08/2012 18:15

Crumb coating covers the cake and prevents crumbs sticking to your fondant - it gives a better finish.

MikeLitorisRings · 08/08/2012 18:17

I knew there must be a reason for it Grin

My decorations are all but ruined. I've put them in a dark corner and covered with kitchen paper.

Fingers crossed at least Some will be useable tomorrow.

oops pressed send too soon...

It also allows you to fill in any uneven gaps/ level any odd bits and gives a very smooth under layer to your cakes so the fondant sits flat and smooth.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/08/2012 18:21

Aaahhh that makes sense. Loads of my cakes have been rather.. bobbly Grin

blueberryboybait · 08/08/2012 18:38

What happened to your decs Mike?

MikeLitorisRings · 08/08/2012 19:06

They just won't set. Finished them yesterday and they were setting lively when I went to bed. Got up this morning to find them soggy and wilting.

Some of the butterflies had to be binned and a few of the flowers. The rest are under my stairs under kitchen paper.

It is really humid which is playing havoc with my sugarpaste things atm. Did you add CMC/tylose? It may need a little more in this weather.

MikeLitorisRings · 08/08/2012 19:19

I used cmc. Didn't occur to me to use more.

I'm making a load more tomorrow so will try more.

blueberryboybait · 08/08/2012 19:20

Normally it is 1/2tsp per 500g of sugarpaste - I am using 3/4 tsp and only working in the evenings.

MikeLitorisRings · 08/08/2012 19:26

Is that the Same if your using gel colours? I have been buying white and colouring it myself, adding the cmc and leaving over night.

I can work much at night as we have no light in the kitchen atm. Don't really have anywhere else time work.

I don't know what you did wrong but I LOVE your rose cup cake you have on your profile. So pretty.

blueberryboybait · 08/08/2012 20:14

Yup, I use colour all my own fondant except red and black. I also dry all my decorations in a tray with a layer of rice and covered with a cloth. The rice absorbs any extra moisture in the air and I can make little nests to gently curve my flowers.

nannycook · 08/08/2012 20:58

Mike, how on earth did that happen? they should be rock hard by now.!!

MikeLitorisRings · 08/08/2012 21:53

No idea nan. I Think I must need jinxed when it comes to sugarcraft!

I will not be beaten and am now off to put them in a tray of rice for the night.

Mike, hope you have'nt got a gas oven, your head will be in there next.Show me a pic of your bows.

wem · 09/08/2012 09:12

Did you have anything else going on in your kitchen Mike? I nearly cried when some daffodils I was doing were setting nicely then all started to collapse. I realised I was trying to dry them in the kitchen while the tumble drier was going and had rice boiling away on the hob. Adding to the already humid weather!

MikeLitorisRings · 09/08/2012 09:27

Nothing else on Wem. Our kitchen is always stuffy so I think it was just that.

Thankfully the rice seems to be working. I'm going to leave decorating it until later today to give them time to set.

Thanks for the tip blueberry.

Change of plan. Had to decorate cake now. I really hope the decks stay ok on there.

Hardest cake I have made so far. Nightmare.

nannycook · 09/08/2012 20:09

How the cake going Mike?

MikeLitorisRings · 09/08/2012 20:52

It's just been delivered. Luckily she loved it.

Just finished making some decorations for the Minnie mouse one I'm doing tomorrow. I used more cmc and they are setting lovely. They are currently resting on a bed of rice!

Will get a pic of today's cake on in a min.
