Hello, my little 7 mo is having a bit of a hard time, showing signs of dairy allergy and poor weight gain so I decided to try and make something ultra nutritious for him... in spite of my squeamishness have got some organic chicken livers.

What on earth do I do with them? Any ideas? I hear its very healthy, full of iron and its easy for babies to chew! He's generally having finger foods rather than purees... Love your tips if your an expert in liver!

I think you have to be careful with the amount of liver as it's high in Vitamin A.

I thought babies had to avoid the same foods as pregnant women... And that would include liver. Not 100% sure...

Ok I know you have to avoid in pregnancy, I'll look into it a bit more - someone recommended it to me. I know it can be high in toxins which is why got organic. Maybe I'll make some pate instead for grown ups.

I think vitamin A is only a concern during pregnancy. No recipes sorry, but organic sounds a good plan if you are giving offal to a young baby as they can have toxins.

Found a mumsnet recipe though www.mumsnet.com/Recipes/i/2537-Chicken-liver-mix

Thanks MMWA, there are also recipes in my old Anabel Carmel book I dug out and she doesn't issue any caution on liver. Maybe I'll ask on weaning page

Nigella suggested mixing with soaked dried apricots in How to Eat. I used to spread it onto toast rather than spoon feeding but Ds did like it.

Toast is a good idea. I just fried it with onion in fingers which he managed to chew this time!. What was really funny was my 4 yr old went mad on it and polished off the rest of what I cooked dipping it in ketchup ... Eeeew he's more adventurous than I am!

My mum used to fry liver with our bacon and egg breakfast. I enjoyed liver as a child but can't stomach it now.
