I'm new to Ocado and have just placed my first two orders. Their own brand stuff (so far) tastes much better than the dire Asda food we've had recently. What do you buy from Waitrose which is better than standard supermarket stuff? I'm pregnant and want to indulge now the morning sickness is wearing off Grin

Tell me your favourites go on..

Oh yes, forgot about frozen herbs, shallots, garlic and chillis which are fantastic for convenience especially in winter when herb garden all dead!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/06/2012 19:12

I was going to say the frozen herbs etc, they are fantastic, use them all the time, also the frozen pizza bases with passata on. The jars of passata are really good too. I second the caramelised onion chutney someone linked at the top, delicious on i't own and great for chucking in gravy, pasta sauce etc

I also like the frozen tortellini pasta as a standby in the freezer. Going to be trying a lot of new things in this weeks order I think!

Love this thread!

There are loads of things that are lovely from Waitrose/Ocado. I really like their butternut squash / sweet potato cubes which are great as a standby to put in the oven & grill with some ginger, cinnamon, garlic etc... mmm!

I really like all their Love Life range as well as their Cooks Ingredients range which however is more pricey.

I like their green ready-washed salads, particularly their baby spinach is great, and also their watercress/spinach/rocket salad which I splash out on all the time as it's so good.

I agree on the wok oil / chilli oil, both excellent. And also the very strong Canadian bread flour is spectacular for bread baking.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/07/2012 17:47

I like Steve's Leaves Baby Watercress, use that all the time.

Big fan here and are you all aware of this offer of £75 off your first five shops.

You have to be a new customer, so all I've done is set up dp as a 'new customer' at the same address and hey presto....

Food tastes even better when cheaper!

I like their lovely pizzas 2 for £5. Roasted veg and courgette and goats cheese and mixed peppers...........

TheMysteryCat · 03/07/2012 19:41

tons! love this thread!

I did a comparison shop a little while back in Morrisons and spent more money (mostly on tat I didn't need) and all the veg and fruit went off within a few days. the waitrose fruit and veg, including the essentials range lasted longer and tasted far better. so, it was a false economy to buy the cheaper fresh food as I didn't get a chance to eat half of it before it went manky.

I love the prepared salads - edamame and aduki bean with soy dressing, the tapas and olive range.

there's some lovely indoniesian vegetable crackers and mini poppadoms!

i agree about the frozen risotto and the frozen stock too!

They also hve quite a good range of Cauldron foods which are all pretty damn good!

forevergreek · 04/07/2012 15:42

Waitrose own beans and shreddies both have up to half the amount of salt/ sugar as the brand versions

ihatethecold · 04/07/2012 17:10

We had a bloody loving steak pie on Sunday. It's family sized for 4or 5. Only cost £3.99 and the quality of the meat was fantastic. I'm sure it should cost more!

sparkle12mar08 · 04/07/2012 21:15

Practically everything Waitrose/Ocado sell is of better quality and taste than other supermarkets so you can't go wrong really, especially if you can afford it without worrying. I flirted with Asda food for a week or two but everything we had was awful. I appreciate that tastes adapt and get used to what they have most of, but it was almost all artificially, chemically tasting, oily and nasty. How can breakfast cereals taste oily?! Asda's can. Same with Tesco, awful food. And the general shopping experience in both is um, interesting and not in a good way. But we can't afford Waitrose all the time, so it's half Sainsbury's, half Waitrose depending on what I'm buying.

forevergreek · 04/07/2012 21:42

Ps you can get a year delivery pass for tues/ weds/ thurs for £14.99 for a whole year of unlimited deliveries on those days

FairyPenguin · 04/07/2012 21:43

I've found that any fresh meat or fish is better than other supermarkets, even the Essentials range is better than a premium range like Tesco Finest.

Fruit and veg is also consistently good. The blueberries at the moment are delicious and half price.

Cereals are good, and frozen croissants. Oh, and frozen chopped garlic is brilliant!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/07/2012 22:01

We've tried several things from this thread this week, the barbecue ribs and garlic marinated chicken joints have been especially nice.

My only complaint with Ocado is that the punctuality is really slipping at the moment, over the last few weeks I would say evey other delivery has been late, when we started a year ago it virtually never happened. They are good at keeping you informed but it is getting annoying.

ceeveebee · 04/07/2012 22:07

Really? They are never late to me. In fact they almost always call me to ask if they can come earlier. Perhaps it depends on the time of day / location - or maybe because I pick a slot with a green can which means they will already be in my area so less likely to be late

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/07/2012 22:40

I pick green slots when I can but as I am in and out a lot pretty well every day I have to choose to fit whatever I am doing. It doesn't seem to make any difference which slots I choose at the moment, Saturday morning 9-10 you would think would be OK, not much traffic, not much chance to get behind and yet still half an hour late last week. They do come early sometimes too, in fact one got a bit snotty with me when I wasn't able to take a delivery early recently, I suspect they are trying to squeeze more deliveries out with the same number of drivers.

FairyPenguin · 04/07/2012 22:42

Mine usually arrive at the beginning of the time slot, or call me earlier and ask if they can arrive early. I did have one late delivery once and it was on a Friday evening. Don't usually have Friday deliveries so I wondered if that was a particularly busy time of week.

ceeveebee · 04/07/2012 22:43

Oh well I am never out before midday (baby twins) so maybe that's why.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/07/2012 22:44

I've given up on Friday evenings totally, they do seem to be the worst.

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/07/2012 22:45

fab frozen pesto cubes, aubergine pickle and carnarolli risotto rice. I love Waitrose. Also ready done spatchcock chicken

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/07/2012 22:47

I do like being able to have Sunday evening deliveries though, brilliant if you've been away for the weekend.

FunnysInLaJardin · 04/07/2012 22:47

oh and TheMysteryCat I have just done a comparison shop with the Co Op and Waitrose came out far the cheapest which made me Shock. Just another excuse to shop there!

Dropdeadfred · 04/07/2012 22:49

I just adore Waitrose and Ocado

Housewifefromheaven · 04/07/2012 22:55

Ocado pack of 6 salmon fillets

Waitrose pack of 6 aberdeen angus rump steaks

Carbonara sauce

Rosemary focaccia

Essential tea

Fish fingers (now called 'posh' fish fingers here)

forevergreek · 04/07/2012 23:30

Ocado/ Waitrose always comes cheapest on comparison sites for our shop. I don't understand all the fuss, we don't spend a huge amount either

Blueberries and most fruit great atm

ihatethecold · 07/07/2012 10:54

daft question but whats the difference between a red or green van when choosing a delivery slot?

ByTheWay1 · 07/07/2012 11:24

The green van slot means the van is already delivering to at least one other person in your area.. so will schedule your delivery next to theirs - saves on fuel/time etc.. hence green....
