Roast Lamb - just put the joint in the slow cooker and leave all day

dreamingofsun · 05/05/2012 09:54

we liked the pork and bbq too. i did what someone suggested and added sauce towards the end of the cooking after removing fat and shredding meat. cooked it in stock and an onion so it didn't go dry.

moonblushtomato · 07/05/2012 18:46

Yum! Slow cooked lamb....tho must admit I do like the crispiness of oven roasted lamb. Don't suppose that's achievable in the slow cooker??

PotteringAlong · 07/05/2012 18:52

Di you need any liquid with the lamb?

nappyaddict · 08/05/2012 15:13

Anyone done the pork and coke without bbq sauce as my fella doesn't like it.

keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 08/05/2012 15:28

wow some of these sound lovely! Marking my place to come back and try out some of the recipes!
I too am not very adventurous with my slow cooker recipes!
I have done a couple of stews but my fave at the moment is a normal bolognese - it just goes so lovely and melt in the mouth tasty compared to doing it in a pan! Smile

nappyaddict · 08/05/2012 15:42

I never use liquid in my slow cooker when cooking joint of lamb, beef, pork, ham, gammon or whole chicken. Sometimes I cook them from frozen which is always handy when you forget to take stuff out the freezer!

nappyaddict · 08/05/2012 23:36

Tried these over the weekend - all very nice.

tomato chilli

cod alla romana

tomato and sausage risotto

oikopolis · 09/05/2012 20:02

nappyaddict you can do the same recipe with an envelope of instant onion soup mix.

nappyaddict · 09/05/2012 23:07

You can also apparently use 165ml of soy sauce instead of BBQ sauce :) What I want to know is what happens to the skin? Does it go all gloopy like chicken skin does if you leave it on? Or did people cut it off before they put the joint in the slow cooker?

nappyaddict · 09/05/2012 23:21

For those that liked the pork in coke have you tried any of nigella's ham recipes? They can be used with ham, gammon or pork. You can also do the cherry coke one with cherryade. Presumably you would just use less liquid for a slow cooker? 6 cans of cherry coke seems a LOT though even when allowing for evaporation in an oven, when the poster above said only to use 1 for the bbq pork recipe.

Instead of BBQ sauce I can also recommend cholula chipotle sauce and asda chipotle chilli roasting sauce

nappyaddict · 09/05/2012 23:28

Slightly different ham in coca cola recipe by Nigella here. Involves black treacle, but maple syrup, golden syrup or honey works just as well. If you want, you can deskin before putting it in the slow cooker and pour the syrup over which saves scoring and glazing after cooking.

I'm about to do the BBQ pork recipe - can anyone tell me if I should take off the crackling fat before cooking it in the slow cooker? Thanks!

dreamingofsun · 11/05/2012 13:11

i'm doing it for the second time, as first really nice. i'm cooking pork in lots of water then draining water and fat off and putting BBQ sauce on meat for last hour. worked well last time

LiviaAugusta · 16/05/2012 23:32

Had the BBQ pork tonight- it was lovely! I did it with home-made ciabatta and salad and it went down a storm.

mumnosbest · 21/05/2012 17:31

mmm tried lots of these now.
Pork shoulder was gorgeous and sausage casserole.
I think anything with chicken cooks brilliantly too.
My oven has been pretty much redundant this month Grin

Made the pork, coke and BBQ sauce tonight.

Beautiful. New casual but impressive party plate, tasty Sunday roast, and delicious wrap filling in our house.

The easiest, cheapest, hassle free, versatile slow cooker idea.

Step one... Place one full can of coke cola in slow cooker

Step two... add pork shoulder joint, I used a fairly small one costing £3.50, could have used one three times as big with the one can, all you get left with is juices for gravy (added with string on)

Step three, added 1/3 of Paul Numan BBQ sauce on top of pork

Switch on to low, leave untouched for 8 hours.

Remove pork, cut string, pull apart,

Add 4/5 tablespoons gravy granules (I used chicken as all I had) and stir

Spoon as much gravy as required on

Freeze the rest of the delicious gravy for your sausages later in the week

Smile
melliebobs · 03/06/2012 15:06

Ok there seems to be rave reviews about it do tommorow I'm doing the coke & pork shoulder. And I've got a bourbon BBQ sauce. So to double check all I need to do is smother pork in the sauce put the coke in the dish n put the meat in & cook for 9 hrs?!

There's nothing else I need to do ?!

And how about gravy?!

Magneto · 07/06/2012 07:55

Marking place can't wait to try all these recipes!

Thing3 · 10/06/2012 17:15

Hi I work 3 days a week normally leaving the house at about 7.30 in the morning and some times not getting in until gone 6. Would a slow cooker be any good for me on those days?

wheredidiputit · 10/06/2012 19:57

Yes it would be, although they can take a while to get use to cooking with.

here it's a blog from a lady who only used her slow cooker for a year.

also if you do a search you will find loads of information on here.

mumnosbest · 12/06/2012 12:41

ok, any good sausage casserole recipes. Kids love the shop ones but mine never taste the same?

mumnosbest · 12/06/2012 12:42

Oops, sorry about the ? My punctuation is as good as my cooking!

This is my fave.

9am: throw in

1 or 2 x onion
2x chicken thighs (so about £4)
1 can tomato
1/2 pot of pesto
50g sundried tomatoes, chopped

bish bash bosh all day. it doesn't really matter if its 6 hours or 9 hours. can chicken be too melty-tender?

6pm: when its getting to supper time

pour in 250gm easy cook brown rice and wait an hour. (or easy cook white rice and wait half an hour).

it comes out like a risotto, or a kind of mediteranean jollof rice.

real nice.

add some mediterranean veg - courgette, sweet pepper, mushroom - either at the beginning if you don't mind it being mega-cooked, or with the rice if you want it a bit fresher.

very nice, very easy.
